Cordon Blue, as far as trhe eye can see, at Babylon

Babylon Beach Club, Bang Tao

Thursday, January 31, 2008
Best Restaurant of 2008 contender

Telephone: 081 9705302

Open: 11am-11pm daily.

Address: On Bang Tao beach, south of Laguna. From Bang Tao, turn left past the Amora Hotel. From Laguna, turn right past the Sai Taan villa development.

Style: Phuket beach. Mostly Thai for European tastebuds.

Price range: Not five-star, but not local prices, either. Mostly the prices seem to be rounded up to 100 baht or 150 baht. We guess that saves the cost of a calculator and the need for too much spare change. Thai salads and curries cost 150 baht. So do stir fries. Tiger prawns will set you back 600 baht, while steamed fish costs 450 baht. Cocktails, rounded again, are 100 baht.

Specialty: Thai food, especially seafood.

What Phuketwan says: The Babylon Beach Club is neatly decorated in white and blue and in a charming setting. You can hear the surf pound on the beach, see the waterskiers flash by, and take in the holiday atmosphere. It's probably delightful at night, too. When waiters pass, the floorboards tend to rock like a passing banana boat, but there are tables and chairs embedded in the sand, too. At these prices, you'd expect to have toothpicks on every table. Not here. Any place that has rice on the menu should also supply toothpicks and at these prices, it's fair enough to expect all extras thrown in. Mind you, the decor is pleasant, the location delightful, and you can go for a dip between courses. A holiday treat

How to find it: At the northern end of the Bang Tao beachfront, Past the Amora Hotel, before you reach Laguna Phuket.

Parking: Plenty of construction going on behind the beachfront so it's a bit catch as catch can. Easier for motorcycles.
