Bangers and mash poolside at @17th Restaurant

@17th Restaurant, Laguna Holiday Club Resort

Tuesday, April 1, 2008
Best Restaurant of 2008 contender

Telephone: 076 271888 ext 8301-8303

Open: 6.30am-10.30pm

Address: Laguna Holiday Club Resort, Laguna Phuket

Style: Relaxed resort style

Price range: Not so relaxed resort prices. Wine by the glass (250 baht) salads (225 baht to 320 baht) pizza bread and babaganoush (150 baht) pizza marguerita (290 baht) sandwiches (295 baht to 330 baht) bangers and mash (310 baht) teriyaki salmon (335 baht) desserts (190 baht). Add seven percent VAT and 10 percent service.

Specialty: @17th does stone grill, tasty meals that you cook yourself at the table. It can be fun but it's best enjoyed during breezy evenings, when the extra heat is blown away.

What the management says: Word of mouth supports the case for @17th perhaps providing ''Phuket's greatest Sunday family BBQ.'' The swimming pool and slide for the children are right in front of the dining area, with the Kids' Club right next door. The brochure plugs ''Biggest meat and seafood bbq selection with lobster, prawns, ribs, steak and much more. Sushi and sashimi selection. Huge dessert buffet.'' Free flow margarita and draft beer at 1080 baht a head.

What Phuketwan says: Away from the beach, this is the most open, relaxed and accessible of Laguna Phuket's restaurants. The view, across to the 17th fairway, over the swimming pool, is green and pleasant. It's definitely more casual yet it's an open secret that the training and standards are set by the more pricey Banyan Tree. The BT training is not always evident. After our bangers and mash were delivered, we waited, then had to ask for the salt and pepper. If resort eating is to your liking, eating here represents good value.

How to find it: Drive to Laguna Phuket then turn right towards the Sheraton and Allamanda. The Holiday Club Resort, which opened in 2006, is on the right before you reach the Sheraton. Stroll in and down through the open lobby area.

Parking: Room for plenty of cars in the street.
