Police in Krabi told Phuketwan today that they believed they knew the identity of the suspect and hoped to make a quick arrest. The Dutch tourist, aged 19, had been beaten in the attack.
She had been treated at Krabi Hospital and was allowed to return to her accommodation in Krabi yesterday, sources at the hospital said.
One policeman confirmed that the rape had taken place, but said he was not prepared to reveal more because the news was likely to damage tourism in Krabi. Other police, however, were more helpful.
It is understood the Netherlands Embassy has been informed and is working to have the young woman make a full statement as soon as possible so she can leave Krabi on schedule and be assured that the case will be pursued.
Female investigating officer Lieutenant Amornrat Sudhikerd told Phuketwan this afternoon that the Dutch couple had had an argument at a bar in Ao Nang about 4am and the woman was attacked walking home alone.
Locals came to her aid after the rape and took her first to Krabi Town Police Station, then on to Krabi Hospital, Lieutenant Amornrat said.
The prime suspect was aged 30 and from Surat Thani, she added.
"because the news was likely to damage tourism"
Always, the only worry.
