I passed by the sign last night, and of these fabulous Disney-like light columns one was working properly, one not at all, and the two other partly... I wonder what it will look like next month. If betting was allowed in this country, I'd bet the flowers are dead :-(

As you might guess from my comment, I judge this to be a huge waste of money which might have been spent much better, for example repairing the.pothole collection of the New Road (behind Jungceylong towards Karon).

RE the 8 mil. baht sign.
It's all about aesthetics in TLand, very little else matters.

I make the drive everyday to Patong, last night there was a group of people that had pulled off and were having some drinks at the sign, which of course slowed all traffic and made it dangerous to pass.

If they didn't intend for people to stop, why are there large flat surfaces around the light columns? Could they have skimmed off 1000 baht for some paint and repainted the road lines? It's a free-for-all for the cars going up and coming down the hill.

8 mill baht and they can't afford a few thousand baht to fill in the gaping potholes all around the Island. I hit one in Rawai the other night that nearly took out the suspension on my truck. I pity anyone on a motorbike that hit's them.

jon - i believe those large flat surfaces are usually referred to as 'the floor'.

one would presume it is easier to lay liquid concrete in this way than to have it match the slope of the hill.
it probably makes for easier maintenance also.

complete waste of money!!

Nice idea, but build at the wrong place!
Its a shame that people never think carefully and just want to show off ego!

There is no parking and if someone decides to stop the car and enjoy the view, the traffic might come to a still-stand and the parked car is endangering others!

Planning ahead rarely extends far in Thailand. Comes to me as no surprise the lights do not work and the sign will turn into a serious traffic safety hazard.

There were a lot of comments on another forum warning about this when the construction was being discussed and of course they were all ignored.

Come to think of it, the sign is quite befitting in highlighting what's wrong in Patong and Phuket.

Perhaps that was the secret agenda behind it all along.
