Top Swedish policeman Bengt Svensson on Phuket yesterday

Top Swedish Cop Backs Phuket Police and Volunteers

Tuesday, November 5, 2013
PHUKET: Top Swedish policeman Bengt Svensson met with Phuket Governor Maitree Intrusud and Phuket Commander Major General Ong-Art Phiwruangnont yesterday. He told journalists later that he thought it was important that Phuket police worked with the expat volunteers. ''For me, it's the best way to work, to be near the citizens, to be near the tourists, to be among them.'' Swedish tourists had no serious concerns about Phuket at present, he said: ''When you are a tourist you have to follow the laws of the country.''

''When you are a tourist you have to follow the laws of the country.''
Truer words never spoken. To many tourists go to another country and seem to believe they are immune to that countries laws and if they get caught breaking the law they believe that there embassy will bail them out.
Not gonna happen.
The embassy provides support but you break the law you are on your own.
So to all the tourists like me have some respect for the laws and customs of the country you are visiting.

What you say is of course true but unfortunately the laws and customs in Thailand include selective and biased law enforcement and entrenched corruption.

Many of the tourists and expats here come from countries where they are used to honest and incorruptible police force and it's quite a shock to discover how different the local Police is over here.

@Arthur, I guess you must have some figures to PROVE your comment re: "To many tourists go to another country and seem to believe they are immune to that countries laws and if they get caught breaking the law they believe that there embassy will bail them out."

Aha, so Bengt needed a vacation?
Not surprised, with all the problems he has at home.
He should fit well in the Phuket police force. See no evil, hear no evil...
