PHUKET: Doctors fear for the mental well-being of a young mother after garbage men discovered the body of a newborn girl in the trash on Phuket today.
Sutam Kansuwan, 49, a garbage truck driver with Rawai Council in southern Phuket, saw a small hand emerge from a plastic bag on a pickup about 11.30am today.
''It's been two days since we last called,'' he said. ''So the baby must have been dumped in the past 48 hours.''
The newborn, with a balloon tied around her throat, was dumped on Soi Suksan One, the east-west connection that runs between Patak Road and Viset Road in the Chalong-Rawai region of southern Phuket.
As soon as Khun Sutam found the baby he called Rawai Mayor Aroon Soroj who alerted paramedics and police.
The baby, of Asian appearance, was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital.
Doctors fear the mother could be suffering from post-natal depression and have urged her to seek medical care as soon as possible.
