Thai Airways A380 Strikes Turbulence, About 20 Injured on Flight to Hong Kong

Friday, August 30, 2013
PHUKET: Fire trucks have surrounded a Thai Airways A380 landing this afternoon at Hong Kong Airport, with injured passengers on board.

About 20 people on board were injured when the aircraft struck turbulence.

It's believed one passenger suffered a broken collarbone. Photographs showed holes in the cabin ceiling, caused by passengers' heads.

Flight TG600 left Thailand at 8am for Hong Kong, Thai Airways deputy managing director Chokchai Panyayong said.

According to officials, the captain turned on the seatbelts sign but the injured passengers had been the slowest to respond.

A second flight - Hong Kong Airlines HX762 from Phuket to Hong Kong - was also hit earlier by turbulence, with six people reportedly injured.

I was supposed to be on the flight on the way back from Hong Kong to Bangkok. Not only does TG have accidents on brand new Rolls Royce like airplanes but they have zero ability to make other arrangements in a satisfactory way. As a biz class passenger, I had to line up for TWO hours to get a new flight. Meanwhile there was zero information provided and NO priority was given to Star Alliance Gold passengers. Fail, fail, fail!!! I hope all the passengers and crew are fine evensong they were carried off the plane on stretchers and with neck braces.

TG can hardly be blamed for the turbulence. It happens. The service response is a different story, but I dare say, it was probably superior to what one would receive in North America or the EU.

@Blue cat - what is an airline supposed to do "magic up" another plane, they run on a timetable and the existing plane I imagine has to have extensive testing to make sure it is safe and undamaged. Would you prefer they just let it fly with 100's of passengers! Or are you just boasting that you are a business class passenger etc.

Having experienced heavy turbulence and seen how it can easily make people and not secured luggage fly around then I always keep the safety belt on ...those who don't will learn the hard way, eventually.

Trouble is people not wearing seat belts at all times when in the seat -should be a rule. Same as idiots who unfasten it upon touch down with the craft still going about 200 miles an hour, they bounce out and hurt others Would like to know how much warnng the pilots had for the turbulence, if any.

Stop b*tching and moaning, Blue cat...you were not the only one delayed because of this incident. are you someone 'special' or something? The reason why you weren't given any information is because it is the ground staff's job not to freak out and alarm travelers, and so that they don't give out false information.

Definitely not TG's fault OR the aircraft's.. the sky was nice and blue, yet they were hit by clear-air turbulence, very unpredictable so it could have happened to any aircraft or airline.

Fiesty Farang is right, it takes time for another airline to get another aircraft ready - new crew, new catering, new flight plans..
