Ten Burmese workers have been allegedly jailed because of unpaid bribes

Ten in Jail: Phuket 'Police Graft' Puts Burma Labor Deal at Risk

Friday, March 9, 2012
PHUKET: Ten Burmese workers have been incarcerated in Phuket Provincial Prison for a month because they refused to make an illegal payment of 5000 baht each to a group of Phuket police, Phuket's Governor was told today.

The extortion demanded by the officers from Tungtong Police Station puts at risk the entire labor supply of workers from Burma (Myanmar) to Phuket, said a senior Labor Department official from Bangkok.

The official, Pakorn Amornchin, was in talks with Governor Tri Augkaradacha today with a delegation of Phuket employers at Phuket's Provincial Hal after consulting the Burmese Embassy in Bangkok.

According to Khun Pakorn, the 10 Burmese were arrested and charged with being in Thailand illegally after they refused to pay 5000 baht each to the police on February 10.

The Phuket employer of the men, Prasan Boontantrawat, said that all their paperwork was in order and the only reason the men had been jailed was because they could not raise the 50,000 baht to pay the bribe demanded by the police.

He said he had written a letter to Provincial Hall officials about the matter, but received no response, so the Labor Department and the Burmese Embassy decided to send representatives in person to Phuket.

A check shows the men have done everything legally and are perfectly entitled to work on Phuket under an MoU between Thailand and Burma, Khun Pakorn said.

He added that Burmese officials were irate at the extortion bid and there was talk of ending the deal between Burma and Thailand if such behavior was permitted.

Governor Tri said that he would have the matter investigated. The police were not at today's meeting to respond to the serious allegations.

Are we really about to see the changes that so many want and Phuket needs?

I doubt you will see any Burmese workers in Phuket in three years the way Burma is going to start to open up.Ther are huge infrastructure projects on the books there.
It will be interesting to see who will do all the work then.

Phuket Wan, Thank you for covering these stories of Thai sticking up to corrupt Thais and Bangkok taking a notice.
Hanging on to these slivers of hope in the future of Phuket.

According to my Thai wife this morning on the Thai TV. Land prices in Burma on the rise! NO foreign ownership problems!
So now we have easy foreign ownership in: Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam & Burma. Where will the private investor go to?

Buy now a nice plot on a good location there and wait five till 7 years for reasonable infrastructure.

Thailand Wake Up, please.

To comment on John's " Why is it the wrong people are in jail?" The 'right people' seldom if ever go to jail. They are simply reassigned to another area, presumably to continue as before.

Once Burma reforms and businesses start to exploit it, the Burmese labor force will dry up. Who will fill the void? Who will fill the potholes?!

This has to be the best news day on Phuket ever. All day long only great news :o)

The corrupt and greedy disagree for sure.

That said, with Burma opening up and bringing with it plenty of opportunities for Burmese back home, why on earth would they stay in Thailand, working in virtual slavery and being treated in such appalling ways ?

Until now they only endured these hardships because it was even worse back home.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to predict what they will choose once Burma opens up properly.

It's by far the largest country in SE Asia and rich in natural resources.

If these 10 Burmese workers are victims of extortion, why are they in jail? If the extortion allegation is true, will their be compensation paid? There is a labur shortage on Phuket and those Burmese workers provide a means of containing price increases. Surely, the local government and the alleged corrupt police officers understand that if the labor pool is not maintained everyone will suffer? well at least now we know why there is a stand alone special squad that answers only to the police commander. One good thing about this event is that it is public. Years ago, this would never have seen the light of day.
