PHUKET: A new Phuket police investigation team that takes orders only from Phuket's Police Commander has swung into action with the busting of a drugs gang and the promise of more raids all over Phuket.
It's the first major innovation by Phuket Police Commander Major General Chonsit Wadhnawarangkun, who took over late last year.
He has let it be known that the squad, established because of the can't-do attitude of some Phuket police, is ''not scared of the Mafia.''
The Phuket Commander's special squad has the power to act in all three of Phuket's districts and in areas policed by all eight Phuket stations.
Last night's raid by the special squad brought the arrest of six people at premises in Soi Yellowshirt, Kathu, and the seizure of 27.52 grams of ya ice methamphetamine with a street value of 300,000 baht, drug-taking paraphenalia, bank books for accounts totalling more than one million baht, 20 mobile telephones and a Toyota Vios.
The six admitted smuggling the drugs onto Phuket. They were named as Amporn Tongman, 46, Prapada Chinhard, 25, Werayot Yaisit, 26, Kittika Hardkarb, 34, Paiboon Jalernsub, 25, and Pracha Nopparat, 34.

Great news. I wish this "not scared of the Mafia" approach spreads out to other, admittingly less urgent areas of crime on Phuket.
