A nurse struggles to get to work as Patong disappears under floods

The Great Sea of Patong: Photo Special

Today's Updating Report

PHUKET: I headed over Patong Hill from Phuket City this morning, with water falling non-stop. The rain started about 9.30pm while I was covering the football. If it stopped at all, I didn't hear it.

My motorcycle made better progress than the larger vehicles. From the Tungtong Police Box on the road over Patong Hill, motorists were in one long traffic jam.

There were streams running across the road at different points going over the hill.

I passed the place where the road developed a hole a couple of years ago and was repaired - so far, so good this time. No hole yet.

I turned into Prabaramee Road and checked out the Patong council kindergarten. Parents who were really worried about the flooding were collecting their kids early.

There were more traffic jams near Patong Hospital and the Kathu Police Station -days like this one must be really tough for emergency workers.

Behind the Jungceylon shopping centre, the water was waist-deep in places, and flowing at quite a dangerous speed. Council officers were trying to advise people not to wade through it, but there's no stopping some people. Perhaps they were heading out for lunch.

I checked out some shops where people were quite distraught. Every time a big vehicle passed, the waves would be sent into the shops.

Soi Nanai appeared to be a no-go area. Heavy rain was still falling when I headed back over the hill.

It will take days to mop up and assess the full damage. Here's hoping the rain stops soon.

I see that they recently repaved the Kathu side of the hill. Much better. Unfortunately, rain water criss crosses the road surface something like 7 times before you get to the bottom of the hill (I counted!). Should have fixed the drains instead of building the white elephant "Patong City" sign.

Over development with no thought to the infrastructure. Greed and corruption.
You reap what you sow.
Good luck for the future.

Seems it is worsen every year. Lot of talks about dealing with issue for the next monsoon rains. It is time to stop building and letting Patong be as it is. Rest of the island will be like this if they continue building.

The photos remind me of the good old days when I would sit on a stool at a Soi Bangla bar and the top of the stool was all that was out of the water. (Every year before they started putting in drainage)

I would not dare to walk these flooded roads, the risk of getting electrocuted by flaky electrics is too high...

I remember the days back in the late 70s when the water would be up to your neck sitting at the bar at the end of Soi Bangla, for a week or two every single year without fail. The drinks were still ice cool though, and the girls prettier than today. And you could cross the road at the end of Bangla any time without having to wait 5 minutes for a break in the traffic. Those were the days.

Thank you PuketWan for your accurate and up to the minute reports of what conditions were actually like in Patong today.

I would like to point out that this flooding has not been limited to Patong, or even to Phuket, but that it has been a huge problem across most of the country today. Some of your readers aught to look at the national Thai news before posting Phuket bashing comments here.

You guys have it way too soft these days. I was first in Phuket in 1969 and there was only one paved road a few miles long. Everything was mud tracks. When it rained, there was a sea of mud flowing through Patong like thick treacle. But the beers were only 10 baht each on Bangla Road and the girls 100 baht a night. Those were my wild hippie days. I could easily write a book about that.

what do they wait? Is the monsoon some kind of new thing happening here???! The very 'efficient' thai Government must Get a solution quickly or just build an Arc and grow a beard. Spend some money to improve and solve this problem instead of building memorials! Yessss.....International Destination....

how strange that the "best memories of expats in these comments here" are all visions from stools in flooded sois and small bars.....and the beauty of the place was from the cheap beer and cheap hookers ( real values of real men, I just feel more and more compassionate)....Wake up people to the real world! You are getting older and you need dry roads to walk now....
