Phuket Floods Tragedy: Tourist Electrocuted in Patong

Thursday, August 25, 2011
Today's Updating Report

PHUKET: A young British tourist was electrocuted as a pool of water became live today in contact with a power line as heavy overnight rain turned Patong and much of Phuket into a '' knee-deep flood zone.''

Power was reported to be out along much of Phuket's entire west coast, from Kata Noi to Kamala, with at least one regular scheduled flight unable to land at Phuket airport.

Power authorities were trying to get to the west coast to restore electricity, but were not able to cross flooded sections of roadways. Parts of Patong were said to be ''like a sea'' today.

Traffic early today across Patong Hill between Phuket City and Patong was reported to have been halted by rainwater than rose to knee-deep in places.

Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation officers were at full stretch all over Phuket, working with local councils to try to restore power and road access.

They were particularly concerned about one village in the south Phuket district of Chalong, near the TOT building, where the flooding had been very bad.

The British man, aged 20, died after being taken to Patong Hospital. He was electrocuted near the Ocean department store about 6am, police said.

The man's travelling companion also suffered a shock as he tried to rescue his friend, police said

British honorary consul Martin Carpenter and the British Embassy were today contacting the dead man's relatives.

Flooding was once a regular feature of almost every downpour in Patong until relatively recently, when a new drainage system was installed.

It is not known why the new system failed to cope with last night's heavy downpour, which began about 9.30pm.

Meteorological officers said today that the rain was expected to continue through until Sunday.

People using small boats were advised that the waves would grow in height on Friday and Saturday.

Phnag Nga and Ranong are likely to experience heavier downpours than Phuket. Landslips will become a greater concern if the rain continues over the next few days.

"It is not known why the new system failed to cope with last night's heavy downpour..." - looking at the result of electric wiring in the streets and else where the only surprise is that there are not more accidents. Sad people have to die in vain.

where exactly was this new drainage system installed?...From what I can see, the flooding in Patong has gotten worse, not to mention alot more muddy from the obvious tearing apart of the mountains and other surrounding land...You have 200 Pee rd looking like a river, Sai nam yen from the intersection at the hospital to the beach..flooded. The waterway that runs between the hopspital and the back road behind Jungceylon cresting over and flooding the road....and on and on...But man oh man, the construction keeps going on with obviously no attention to the infrastructure.

Yes some time perhaps someone with adequate funds should sue the pants of the electric co..Everywhere in Thailand there are taped up "taps"
(disconnected meters I assume) from overhead power lines at head height..bloody negligence..

I was stuck at the lantern hotel with many others leaving for airport.. the water was at my thigh area. But I had no choice, to lug my bags n raincoat to walk in the muddy water.. its was scary as there might be snakes or insects.. but I managed to walk to jungceylon where the water was ok.. a caucasian was seen relaxing on a float in the flood, that was really funny..

Oh yes,not to mention tat was a power cut across majority of patong pubs on wed nite since the long lived rain arrived.. while walking down the streets,I have lots of electric static sound,it was scary.. like the cables were ready to give way anytime.. but overall, I simply like patong.. god have mercy on patong..

"It is not known why the new system failed"
Easy one to answer actually given this is Thailand; all the money that went into the project was funnelled into all the wrong pockets. Not much is done properly in this country simply down to corruption. Sad, but true.

Editor Comment:

In this particular instance, the most likely cause is accumulated rubbish, blocking drains. If you have some evidence that corruption was the cause, please tell us all about it. Guesswork is a waste of your time and ours.
