UPDATE Russian Tourist's Bag Snatchers Tackled By Phuket Policeman, Pair Arrested

Monday, October 21, 2013
UPDATING All Day, Every Day

SERGEANT Songwut Noosuk has been awarded 10,000 baht by Phuket's Police Commander for his off-duty bravery.

Original Report

PHUKET: A Russian tourist has her snatched bag and cash back - thanks to an off-duty Phuket policeman who intervened and colleagues who quickly arrested two culprits.

Kazmina Marcarita, 27, was delighted having witnessed the effort by a Phuket police sergeant to stop the thieves as he saw them snatch the bag.

The two men on a motorcycle pulled up as Ms Marcarita walked along the bypass road between Big C supermarket and Central Festival Phuket shopping mall about 1pm yesterday.

Offduty sergeant Songwut Noosuk saw what was happening and rode to the rescue - but hit the footpath curb and crashed, breaking his collarbone.

Despite being in great pain, the sergeant was able to call by walkie-talkie to other police who set up a road block as fast as they could.

The two thieves were too fast. But Sergeant Songwut remembered the number of the getaway motorcycle.

At 8pm last night, Phuket City police raided an address in Srisoonthorn and arrested two young men.

Piya Chaisingha, 20, from Maha Sarakham province, and Pongsathorn Tawaichua, 19, of Phuket, confessed.

Ms Marcarita got back her back with $300, 3000 baht and personal documents inside. The sergeant is recovering.

Sergeant Songwut Noosuk sure has my respect for some great law enforcement and for embodying the qualities that make a quality officer.

1) Keen & observant eye.
2) Dedication to the job even off-duty.
3) Quick reflexes to radio other officers.
4) Excellent memory.
5) Desire to follow through on a case.

Hope he has a fast recovery...broken clavicles are quite painful.

Hmmm...kinda funny that ThaiMike was just describing to me in another post how Thai police only serve and protect when they are bribed to do so. Hope ThaiMike reads about this Sergeant.

Cheers ;-)
