PHUKET: An Irish tourist told police on Phuket today that she is withdrawing a claim of rape she made on Phi Phi last night.
The woman, aged 22, told Tourist Police on Phi Phi last night that she had been raped and requested a trip to Phuket for health checks.
She said the rape was committed by another tourist in her room.
Today the woman arrived on Phuket and asked police in Chalong to contact the Tourist Police on Phi Phi to cancel the complaint.
Phi Phi, about 70 minutes by ferry from Phuket, has the reputation for being a scenic island to visit by day for snorkelling and a rites-of-passage drink-and-drugs destination for twenty-somethings by night.

Would it be too much to ask the police to follow-up on false claims?

Editor Comment:
Phuket police have followed up on false claims in the past - there is the Stevie Bamford case, for example - but there could be all kinds of mitigating circumstances in this case. Without knowing details, it's probably better to let the young woman and police determine whether anything or nothing should happen. Too many rapes go unreported. Without knowledge of precisely what happened, Our sympathy still rests with this young woman, not the man. Perhaps there should be a new crime: seduction employing a liquor overdose.
