Phuket's Camara Ahmed goes down, and everyone knows it's serious

Phuket's Stricken Star in Fight of His Life: Photos

Sunday, October 31, 2010
DRAMATIC photographs told the story of Camara Ahmed's collapse during a football match for FC Phuket on Saturday evening. What the photos from Surakul Stadium in Phuket City could not show was the depth of feeling that followed.

Ahmed is still in a coma this evening in Bangkok Hospital Phuket. Back home, he has an anxious wife and a one-month-old child.

The next 24 hours or so will be critical for the young professional football player. Keeping a vigil outside the Cardiac Care Unit of the hospital in Phuket City were his two Ivory Coast compatriots and fellow FC Phuket players, Diarra Ali and Nene Bi.

Senior officials from FC Phuket were there too, along with fans of the team that has rapidly risen up the ranks, thanks to the help of the skillful Ivory Coast players.

The next big game for FC Phuket after Saturday's 1-0 win comes on November 6 in Bangkok, and the fans and players are already working on a benefit the following week back in Phuket for Ahmed.

The plan is to sell white tops carrying Ahmed's photo and No. 28 for 199 baht in the leadup to the next Phuket home game.

Saturday night's win took Phuket one more step along its meteoric road to promotion from Second Division, but most people would have happily sacrificed the win for Ahmed to be restored to good health.

The prognosis for the 26-year-old professional and father will only become clearer over the next day or so. Phuket will be wishing him all the best.

Ahmed fell to the ground in the second half after Phuket scored what turned out to be the winning goal against Chainat FC.

So tragic when a well-conditioned athlete in the prime of his life goes down like this. Wishing him all the best for a full-recovery and a quick return to the pitch.
