Look at me . . . Mike Shekin gets the message after a wild Phuket ride

Phuket Tourist's Wild Ride Earns Wife's Evil Eye

Saturday, October 30, 2010
RUSSIAN tourist Mike Shekin felt the withering gaze of his pregnant wife yesterday after a drunken escapade that led him to ride a motorcycle on the sand at a popular Phuket beach around midnight.

Police were also less than understanding. Mr Shekin, 26, who had his friend Ivan Belysov on the back of the sandy and sopping rented motorcycle, faced a court appearance.

Officers said that when he was breath-tested, Mr Shekin measured 0.194, well over the 0.05 blood alcohol limit.

The two Russians had been nabbed after riding along the sand at Kata about 11.45pm on Thursday night, and being apprehended in front of the Club Med Resort.

Family and friends turned out at Chalong police station yesterday as the cold light of day probably took the edge off the escapade for Mr Shekin and his friend.

As pillion passenger, Mr Belysov handed over the cash of his 100 baht fine.

With the motorcycle impounded until after the court hearing, Mr Shekin will also have some explaining to do to the motorcycle renter.

The family group arrived five days ago and has seven more days to enjoy on Phuket. Withering gazes are likely to keep coming for a while.

0.194 is not well over 0.5.
Is the limit 0.05?

Sorry, yes. We've fixed it.

good to see this will go to court even though the fine will not be more than b2000. Some lunatic was driving down Bangla the other afternoon pulling wheelies on a big bike. Unfortunately the cops weren't around to stop him. There is a difference between having fun on holiday and behaving like a total ****.

Great picture. Safer in the paddy wagon and he knows it!

As for Mr Ree's comment on Bangla, until the 5-6 policemen at the east end are done overseeing the transition of their box into a Burger King stand you'll be able to get away with nearly anything!

they were riding a scooter down the beach in the middle of the night, big deal. he might have scared off some low lifes and saved someone from a mugging, or worse

Yes, Mr. Ree got it most properly wrong.

The guy on the Big-Bike might well have been the Burger King express delivery service :)

My apologies gentlemen- I was trying to be subtle for a change. Do you want to supersize the Police Box?
