Phuket Yachtie Four 'Slaughtered by Pirates'
Tuesday, February 22, 2011
CNN and MSNBC are both reporting that all four Americans aboard a yacht hijacked by Somali pirates had been killed. The hostages were shot during negotiations for their release, CNN said.
The yacht Quest was owned by Jean and Scott Adam, who left on their voyage from Phuket, and as Christian evangelists the much-travelled pair carried Bibles with them on board.
Also on Quest were another American couple, Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle.
They had been traveling with yachts participating in the Blue Water Rally since their departure from Phuket earlier this month, rally organisers said Sunday.
Then the Quest struck out on its own into pirate waters.
Four US Navy ships had been shadowing the Quest after it was taken over by the pirates.
While negotiations were underway to gain the release of the Americans, US forces responded to gunfire aboard the Quest, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Two of the pirates were killed by US forces and 13 captured, officals said. After boarding the Quest, military personnel found the bodies of two other pirates.
''Despite immediate steps to provide lifesaving care, all four hostages ultimately died of their wounds,'' according to a statement from US Central Command.

What a bunch of politically correct wimps we have become, we allow these pirates to do as they please and can't stop them the only people with any balls is the Russians, they kill them.
Well its real easy, draw a line around the Somalian coast and we have enough warships in that area to enforce that using modern technology and any body who tries to venture through that with out being stopped and searched we blow out of the water. How long do you think the nonsense that has been going on for years now will continue.
The trouble is the west is all trying to be politically correct as you think its a Muslim problem where as these are a bunch of thugs and this never works with this sort.
''Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a piece of s**t by the clean end.''

I really wonder, why they do not sink the "mother" ships of the pirates, bomb their villas and predate their leaders. How many years more? How many more millions pressed out of ship owners? How many more dead? This business must be made much more costly for the pirates.

Hardly the right time to display your personal prejudices, Glen. Show compassion, please.
Editor:
A quote from cnn.com.
http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/africa/02/22/somalia.us.yacht/
"They were very conscious of the threat posed by pirates, Stolnitz said, adding that Scott Adam had said weeks before that he was concerned about pirate activity in the area, a region he had never visited. But, he said, Adam was determined to sail the world himself rather than ship his boat, as some other yacht owners have done."
They were aware of the dangers but still proceeded, right into the hand of muslim somalis.
What other outcome did they expect?
Converting the somali pirates to Christianity?
No sympathy.

Nothing in the report supports the inference the victims were killed by the pirates. With four gunships, "responding..," I'd say it was likely to have been the US Navy.

I wonder if having all those bibles on board got the islamic pirates a bit upset with them.
the greatest threat to islam is competition by other religions ( not as strict)

We know already when you're coming from the amount of talking you do and it surprises everyone how you find the time to breathe with the talking going out and the food going in. Ao Chalong pier bar owners are already stocking up on earplugs for their guests.

If one wants to access the Suez canal, you have to go by Somali pirates.
Otherwise, transit to Europe is all the way west around Africa.

Sorry, I'm not the owner of Mr India.
You must be another bible nut if you got bent out of shape about my first entry and calling for a compassion.
Would you ride a bike through Afghanistan?
Would you go for a midday run through Ramadi or Baghdad?
They knew the dangers of Somali pirates they still sailed into harms way.
Sorry, no compassion for the reckless.

@Glen,
You have no compassion for the reckless? Yet you have a reputation for crashing your motorbike in the street on Chalong pier road in a rather drunken and reckless fashion? Your drunken behavior is nothing short of reckless on a daily basis, and this will eventually lead to your demise. Then we can all sit around and tell jokes and show no compassion. How does that sound?

@ Jesse.
Who do you think i am?
How does riding a motorbike in Phuket,Thailand have any bearing on a suicidal couple in Somali pirate waters?
By the way, I am not suicidal to be even sit a motorbike while stationary and prefer the safety of 4 wheels.
I'm not a clown here to tell jokes, i'm talking about compassion for a couple with an obvious death wish.

Educated people are not religious? Hmmm, news to me, Glen
@ Editor.
I stand corrected.
The educated bible nuts are usually politicians in the position of power to manipulate the masses.
The yachties can't to educated knowing where they were going weeks before their journey and sailing into Islamic pirate waters with a boat full of bibles.
An educated duo would not have make that choice after the weeks of uncertainty about the trip.
Smart or suicidal?

well for the first these pirates operates in the most corrupt area in the world, and as you know these people have money, second all neighboring countries have a large population of somali people, they don't want to upset them up and get more problems inside their own country with protests, bombs etc etc, that why they don't announse
their thoughts or opinions.
Not so many pirates have survived from attacks in tz etc. But this are big business and the money is invested in neighboring countries like Kenya, where they have acquired power and services

Please be careful with your headlines. Yacht owners being killed by Somalian pirates... the fact that they had been in Phuket previously does not justify the headline, which - when I read it - implies that there are pirates in Phuket.

Actually, editor, the facts are behind Glen. It's a researched, proven fact that a graph of religiosity (belief in a god, for example) shows an inverse correlation to education. Put simply, the higher a degree you've been able to attain, the less likely you are to hold religious beliefs. >Snap.<
You can read about the evidence by simply typing +corellation +religion +education into Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.

I don't think it's a statistic that counts for any conclusions. Religion is an individual choice, and best left that way. The only thing worse than a religious zealot is an anti-religious zealot.

I met Sam for a beer and it was a wild time at sailors rest where this topic was discussed by people who actually knew the couple that was slaughtered.
The couple were concerned and discussed it with people but still went forward with the trip.

@ Editor.
Was the email address submitted the same as the one i submit my comments?
Obviously not.
I always blog using my real name and email.
It shows your moderation skills lack credibility as you allowed someone to post using my name and make slanderous accusations that i'm gay when it was obvious the email addresses are not the same.
Why let that ride?
You moderate other topics when libel comments are made.
Once again, please delete that libelous post.

Can one anonymous person libel another anonymous person by impersonation? I don't think so, Glen. The fantasy world of online comment doesn't count. We are certainly aware of libels in the real world. Use your real full name, and your real reputation would deserve to be protected. Use a four-letter pseudonym, and your ''reputation'' is about as valid as your opinion.
It's a different case, for example, at Thai Visa, where my real name was used and where I have been libelled - without even being allowed to respond. TV closed my membership without consultation or notification some time back. Now they allow libels to be posted, without giving me the option to respond, then close the thread so the lies are left dangling for all to read. So much for freedom of expression and opinion online, eh, Glen? There's certainly no editorial integrity at Thai Visa.
@ editor
Just admit the post regarding gay insults and adult friend finder was not posted using my submitted email address.
You know it wasn't so why would you allow it?
Do you enjoy the drama and trouble it may bring against a few expats that frequent the same area?
Maybe if you kept the place moderated in a professional manner many would would take you seriously.
Yes, i have seen you being slandered on Thai Visa but i don't post there and i don't know you, i only judge you on how you conduct yourself on this website.
I'll leave it at that and i hope you can just admit that entry was not submitted by me just to prove my point.

I don't check email addresses, Glen, unless there's some cause to do so. While we have occasionally banned commenters from reading Phuketwan, anyone with an email address is free to comment here. The people who deserve most regard are those who use their real names - although the opinions of others are often of value. Online comment is - regrettably - not just free but easy.
Hi ED.
It seems a little two-faced to ask posters to use their real names, when, on your phuketwan websites you are too scared to post pictures of yourself or your team? Whats up you afraid or you just hiding behind the facade of protecting yours and your reporters identity. Come on what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Print this comment you at phuketwan???????

It's a voluntary thing here, Sam-who-won't-be-back-again. We don't believe in convention or compulsion. We rely on our readers to be honest. Both email addresses from the two people using ''Glen'' contain the word ''Glen.'' To assume you are the only ''Sam Kelly'' in the world when your email is nothing like Sam Kelly indicates how impossible it is to verify the real identity of contributors.
