Phuket Weather Alert: Storms Will Trigger High Waves, Possible Floods

Phuket Weather Alert: Storms Will Trigger High Waves, Possible Floods

Tuesday, April 16, 2013
PHUKET: Waves of up to three metres are expected with heavy rains anticipated to lash Phuket and neighboring provinces today and tomorrow.

Forecasters at the Phuket-based Southern Meteorological Centre (West Coast) advise small boats to stay on-shore.

The prediction of heavy rain on Phuket and in Phang Nga and Ranong to the north has also brought warnings of the possibility of floods and landslips.

The decision on whether to put to sea is usually left to individual speedboat ''captains.'' Sinkings tend to occur when ''captains'' ignore severe weather warnings.

Motorists are advised to slow down or avoid unnecessary journeys.

Heavy rains at the beginning of Phuket's monsoon season usually trigger floods in Phuket City and Patong.

The arrival of the April-May storms also means that conditions at Phuket's beaches are changing. Seasonal rips appear and can be dangerous.

Swimmers are advised to always follow the directions of Phuket's lifeguards and to swim between the safety flags.

Eight tourists drowned on Phuket's popular west coast beaches between mid-May and mid-July last year.

Ha ha ha. Didn't Whistle Blower write, "Big storm coming next week with strong wind on Tuesday and Wednesday...
Posted by Whistle-Blower on April 10, 2013 17:59 ".
Guess he reads a proper weather forcast channel. Well done WB you predicted right this time.

Indeed. A week out is a very good call.

WB where did you get the info as I find good weather forecasts for Phuket not easy to find apart from the high season where the sea is generally calm.

Regarding Whistle Blower's Prediction -
I think it is more accurate to say, "Even a broken clock is right twice a day..."

Robin, you have just inserted an air nozzle into WB's head and it will be inflating out of control...

Side note, it is good to see some rain. Gets everything nice and green again.

Hope everyone stays safe at the beaches.

I recommend as iOS or Android app, WeatherPro from Meteogroup. With the additional premium package you get two weeks forecast. Temp/Rain/Suntime/Wind/Weather warnings and more per each hour of the day. Not cheap, but worth it. Data is pretty accurate for Thailand.
MeteoEarth is from the same people, but with great graphic interface. The premium package will bring here also more details and work for both apps.
