PHUKET: An American man visiting Phuket died on a snorkelling day trip to the neighboring island of Phi Phi yesterday.
The 49-year-old man, who travelled with a party on the speedboat Hooty from Phuket's Boat Lagoon, was in the water off Yung island, near Phi Phi, about 12.10pm when others discovered he was not moving.
A spokesperson for the Chaofa Rescue Centre in Krabi province, where Phi Phi is located, said the man could not be revived.
It is believed he had a preexisting heart condition. However, staff at Phi Phi Hospital said today that his death is being recorded as a drowning.
His body was brought back to Phuket and is now at Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City.
Phuketwan has the man's name but is awaiting confirmation that his family has been notified before publishing.
Korean tourist Kim Jung-Ku, 29, was found floating face down off Phi Phi on September 29 on a day-trip outing. According to reports, water was found in his lungs, indicating that he drowned.
Two Chinese women have recently died on snorkelling trips near Phuket, prompting a warning that even a simple holiday outing can be dangerous for people unused to the water.
