Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul: Policies then Phuket are her likely priorities

Phuket Visit Planned as New Tourism Minister Starts Formulating Policies

Monday, September 15, 2014
PHUKET: Thailand's new Tourism and Sports Minister, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, began work today and is expected to visit Phuket at the earliest opportunity.

Khun Kobkarn will be formulating her policy today and tomorrow, Phuketwan has been told, with an eye to bolstering tourism throughout Thailand.

She is expected to visit Phuket before the Fourth Asia Beach Games, which run from November 14-21.

The opening of a new viewing station on top of Rang Hill in Phuket City could present an opportunity for the minister to visit, Phuket's Director of Tourism and Sport, Santi Pawai, said today. ''We should have a date for the opening soon,'' he said.

Khun Kobkarn knows Phuket well. Her husband, Major General Chonsit Wadhnawarangkun, was Phuket's Police Commander in 2011-12.

The previous Minister for Tourism and Sport, Somsak Pureesrisak, shared the Phuketwan Phuket Person of the Year 2013 award with pop singer Rihanna for the way in which he encouraged a dialogue between ambassadors and the island's authorities to improve tourism and service.

Before Khun Somsak, it was not unusual for tourism ministers to go for years without feeling the need to visit Phuket, despite the island's position as a source of revenue and the need to maintain its reputation as a great place for a holiday.

The clearance of the beaches and the transformation of the island's taxi and tuk-tuk services are likely to make Phuket more appealing and become part of a strategy for preserving the region's natural beauty and charm.

Lets all hope she can enjoy the Jet-ski's Para-sailing and other natural attractions of our beaches.

Perhaps the minister may consider beginning her tenure with a campaign to honour and respect tourists who choose to visit her Kingdom and the Thai people, bringing with them so much wealth towards jobs and opportunities for the land of smiles.. reminding the people how lucky they are that tourism is so successful. Reminding the people of their culture of respect... maybe then tourists will remember why they love Thailand!?

I wonder what her qualifications are to allow her to be Tourism Minister or is it the fact her husband is in the General Club?
Personally, I believe when someone in government is given a job, they should have been trained in that job.

I wouldn't confuse the Army with the police force, tbs. As Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was a businesswoman with no previous experience as a politician, precisely what do you mean? Just how does one train to be Minister for Tourism and Sport, tbs? Join the beach volleyball tour? It's good that space has been found for two women among all the medals and braid.
