The young Russian suspect, handcuffed among other Phuket suspects

Phuket Tourist Caught in Drugs, Guns Crackdown

Tuesday, January 4, 2011
EFFORTS are being made to speed the processing of a young Russian tourist who found himself caught up in Phuket's islandwide crackdown on weapons and drugs.

Phuket's Police Commander, Major General Pekad Tantipong, asked the Superintendent of Kamala Police Station, Colonel Nattaphakin Kawnchaiperk, to expedite the case, and to let the major general know the outcome.

The 18-year-old Russian was arrested when a small amount of marijuana was allegedly found in one of his pockets at a police checkpoint in Kamala about 9pm last night.

The young Russian was holidaying on Phuket with his girlfriend, who is awaiting the outcome of his case.

He was presented to the Phuket media at the Phuket City police headquarters today, along with others among the 27 people arrested in the seven-day New Year holiday crackdown.

Seven handguns, including several home-made weapons, were seized by police, along with quantities of cocaine, ya ice and ya bah (methamphetamine.)

There were four road deaths on Phuket over the seven days, - two Canadians in a local bus crash early on New Year's Day and two Thai male motorcyclists.

The second motorcycle death, involving a 21-year-old man, occurred in Phuket City last night.

After the media presentation, Phuket's top police met behind closed doors in preparation for the annual changes next month that will probably see several senior transfers.

Only interested, but why would the young Russian be expedited in this case when others are not? Just a question, maybe I am missing something in the report.

Efforts are being made to speed cases involving tourists. Police Commander Pekad Tantipong undertook at the last 'Phuket Parliament' gathering with honorary consuls to oversee all cases involving expats.

It seems the amount if for personal use and not sale (even that is still illegal). Good idea, heavy fines, and Non-Grata on his passport...case closed.

Nice anti-foreigner headline. So one tourist is caught with a small amount of marijuana, and 26 Thais were arrested for heavy drugs and weapons but you emphasize the one tourist?? Why is that??

Editor Comment:

Er, because we are read by expats and we regard the security and safety of visitors to Thailand as a high priority, Jimmy. If it was all about numbers, we'd be reporting on China and India.

Please Thailand , stop criminalising cannabis. Alcohol is a far more destructive drug yet is sold openly.
