Soi Toh Kied: Other roads on the island have worse surfaces

Phuket Community Pleads: Who Will Fix Our Road?

Monday, January 3, 2011
The Editor of Phuketwan has received the following urgent request from readers in Kamala:

To whom it my concern!

We are a group of house owners at Kamala Beach, Soi Tho Kiet (Moo 5)

We would like to ask for your advice on how to find out who is responsible for our road (the only road) leading to our houses.

The road is so bad that people are injured falling off motorbikes; our cars are damaged and regularly get flat tires due to the terrible and treacherous road surface. It is dangerous for the families and children who attend the school which is positioned on the road. In addition it has dangerous corners that do not properly show oncoming traffic.

It is just a matter of time before someone is seriously injured and hospitalised. If this is not enough there is a rubbish disposal area at the end of the road which is home to all sorts of vermin and stray dogs and cats from all over the place.

In short the road is a blemish on the community within which we live. It is affecting our peaceful lives as not one day goes by where we all curse this obstacle track that is meant to be a ''road''.

It devalues our homes and impacts on our peaceful and law abiding lives. It has to change!

According to the village headman, the road is privately owned and leased by his brother. As the road is private the OBT has no responsibility we have been told by the village headman. The owner of the road says he has an agreement with the developer to make a new road but this is yet to happen.

The developer is using the road for his development projects and has been promising to build a new road for over 6 years. The road just keeps getting worse!

Just a few days ago the developer filled the many 10 inch deep holes with some dirt again after some people complaint again, but we know that in only a few weeks the road will [be] nearly impassable again.

We are about 30 houses and we wonder how it can happen that nobody seems to be responsible for the road leading to a public housing estate?

We would be most grateful as to your help and support as to how we can fix the road. It is no longer tenable. Please help!

Feel sorry for those people. We had the same problem at our area.
Many times I wonder why a financially sound province like Phuket has such bad roads. Compare the roads in the far north or north-east to Phuket!!

Why certain developer never care for their buyers?
I actually know this road at Kamala and one person living there!

Another friend of mine wanted to buy a house there, but when he listened to the people about all the empty promises by the developer and seeing the road and dirt he decided to buy at Laguna.

You should see the disgusting roads surfaces in the Laguna area. Such a wealthy area and no one can fix the "Private" road ?
Soon it may be so private, you may not be able to drive through there.
Bad roads are no excuse, ok ?

Yes, i like to stay anonymous as I am one of the house owners in this road and don't like to get into trouble!
Empty promises from developer to build new road since many years, bad road for many years, accidents did already happen, neighbors damaged his car, stray dogs etc.
Even the streetlights we have to fix ourselves if we want lighting!
Please help us!!!

Editor Comment:

The road looked no worse than many others on the island to our reporters today, Anonymous. They have certainly seen more dangerous potholes.

Dear Editor
Thank you for visiting this area. I will send you some pics how it looks just before the developer decided to fill the deep holes with sand and dirt a few days ago - as he do every year once after people complain...

I will also send you pictures again in two month how it will look again.... Even with your comment in mind, we hope that this type of road is not acceptable! Wait for the pics...

PS: have you seen the exposed steel which punctures tires?

Editor Comment:

We are always hesitant to publish any photos from anonymous sources, Anonymous too. At some stage, you will need to say who you are to be believed.

Public in Patong become private cause thais want to make business (and make money) using public resources.. instead when private means expenses, private should become public.. Dear "group of house owners at Kamala Beach, Soi Tho Kiet" you must open your wallet and fix your road: sorry but this is your country and this is your law... thai law allows private road? good! Take care of it!

Those people or house owners seems to have several issues when reading the article:
1.) A developer who apparently promised more than he delivered
2.) OBT who seems not to show any responsibility
3.) Village Headman who cannot/will not help as the developer is his relative
So, with this in mind and considering this is Phuket, the house owners should not / cannot complain and do the road themselves!

My recommendation to this house owners:
You are 30 households as I can read, and 30 households do have a lot of influence in local elections in a small village! Ensure all Thai citizens are registered locally and tell the authorities now that you will vote only for the party which fixes your road before the next election.

Of course the developer won't spend any money on the road. To him, it's a waste of money that won't make him a thing.
The person was too mean to give away the road to the government, yet, that is exactly what the smart developers do.

Once the land that the road occupies is deeded to the government, the Or Bor Tor then becomes responsible for it's up-keep.

To the residents who are affected by this road.
Don't bother trying to convince the developer to fix the road. Try and show him that giving up the road to make it a public road is in every-one's interest. A win-win situation.
