Svend Aage Schwaback: final meal was a slice of pizza

Phuket Tourist Bites on Pizza Slice, then Departs

Thursday, March 25, 2010
A DANISH tourist, due to fly home from Phuket today, decided to treat himself to a take-away pizza before heading for the airport.

About 2.30pm this afternoon, a room maid used her key to open the door of his room at the no-name guesthouse in Karon.

She found Svend Aage Schwaback on the bed in his 600 baht-a-night room, dressed only in a pair of shorts, a piece of pizza in his throat.

The remainder of the pizza, with two pieces missing, was on the bed, alongside the body of the 69-year-old.

Only an autopsy will be able to determine whether the piece of pizza played a direct part in his death at the nondescript Thaina Road guesthouse, or perhaps he just happened to be eating when his time came.

Schwaback's body is now in Vachira Hospital in Phuket City while Danish embassy officials await instructions from relatives.

ED: "..then departs". You find some humor in this situation? Are you sick, wierd, Australian, or all of the above?

Stuart, I don't think the Editor was finding any humor in this tragedy. But the use of the verb ''depart'' is spot-on in this case:

Word Origin & History

depart
early 13c., from O.Fr. departir, from L.L. departire "divide" (transitive), from de- "from" + partire "to part, divide," from pars (gen. partis) "a part." As a euphemism for "to die" (to depart this life) it is attested from c.1500. Transitive in Eng. lingers in some senses; the wedding service was till death us depart until 1662.

2. To die.
3. To vary, as from a regular course; deviate: depart from custom.

Nice work.... I hope when you die some newspaper prints an equally disrespectful piece about you.

Have some sodding dignity and respect eh? How do you think this guys relatives would feel on reading this?

That or sod off and write for some Thai rag where this type of drivel belongs.

Editor: Sad, tragic lonely deaths occur every day. No disrespect was intended.

Yip I still read the PW every day.

You illiterate English scholars, how about the headlines . . .

"Man eats Pizza, chokes and croaks." or
"Tourist eats Pizza, retires and expires."

Get real. he snuffed it.

When it comes to disrespect, you'd have to wonder why this paragraph is allowed to appear in a report on the death of an expat:

''Lt Angkarn said the convulsions may have been associated with alcoholism.''

To me, that's disgraceful.

"Get real. he snuffed it."

Yes I get it, but is it's either a pizza news or a piece of news and the editor needs his arse felt. It will happen to his sorry ass soon. Dignity please, not red top sensationalist shoddy sleazy crappy reporting. BTW Krackels. I am a Jock not a Pom.

Editor: And to think Scotland has given the world some of its brightest minds. Death knows no dignity. We don't cover up the truth.

Stuart.
Great Jocks of the world unite. My great grandfather gave the world the modern bicycle as we know it today.
My cousin was a British PM.
Good on the Jocks.

Editor: LoS, your comment has been reduced to nothing to protect the mental health of the Phuketwan public. What's sad to consider is that racism may not even be your worst trait.
