PHUKET: An EMS truck performed a flip in Phuket's main highway yesterday as latest figures showed continuing progress in Phuket's war on the road toll.
Eight deaths on Phuket roads in March took the total for the first quarter of the year to 29 compared to 30 for the same period last year, 39 in 2010 and 42 in 2009.
A series of multiple crashes in Phang Nga involving the deaths of tourists probably added to the impression that Phuket's toll has been rising this year.
Public Health figures for Phuket, released today, show that's not accurate. The number of people admitted to hospital as a result of injuries also dropped from 1545 in February to 1316 in March this year.
Almost every day, though, there are spectacular crashes on Phuket that could so easily turn deadly. Yesterday about 3.30pm in Thepkasattri Road, a Pan Thai Air van was heading from Post Offices in Phuket City and Kho Kaew to pick up mail in Thalang.
In Srisoonthorn, a motorcycle cut across in front of the van and driver Satidpong Pantu, 39, swerved to avoid it, flipping the van in the process. He and his two passengers escaped unhurt.
Four people drowned on Phuket in March, according to Phuket Public Health figures, with 11 people taken to hospital for treatment. That took Phuket drownings for the year to five, half the number of 10 in 2011.
At the same stage in 2010, seven people had drowned on Phuket. In 2009, the figure stood at 17.

That is good news. Assuming that the number of people on the island are growing as well, that brings the figures per capita even more down!
