Security camera footage of the 4.2 million baht Phuket gold thief

Phuket Thief Flees with 4.2m Baht in Gold and Gun

Saturday, June 4, 2011
PHUKET: POLICE on Phuket are hunting an armed robber who wrestled a gun from a gold shop staffer this afternoon and escaped with jewellery valued at 4.2 million baht.

The thief, wearing a baseball cap and a white Starbucks t-shirt, rode off on a motorcycle after taking his substantial haul from the Thanet gold shop in southern Phuket City, near the Slaughterhouse Intersection.

The man entered the store about 1pm. When the daughter of the owner pulled a gun, the man wrestled the gun from her and fled with the weapon.

The gold has been valued at 4.2 million baht.

The number plate on the motorcycle was noted. Police say it was rented from Patong.

The motorcycle was found soon after, near the Phuket City Sunday market.

Police at the Tachatchai Checkpoint leading off Phuket are double-checking all vehicles in case the man was picked up at the spot as part of the getaway.

Security cameras captured the man's face and general appearance.

Phuket --- the wild, wild east. Entrepreneurs and authorities are collaborating on a campaign featuring the kid and the marshall.

I see the official take has dwindled exponentially from what was first reported.
Damn, pesky decimal points!

Its illegal for a 13 year old to be working.

I would assume it illegal for a 13 year old to have a gun.

IMO a shop that arms a child and puts them in the position of guarding such wealth is making its own problems, and is risking the child in a very unhealthy way.

Let's not jump to conclusions, please. At 13, standing behind the counter with your mother on a Saturday at the family gold shop doesn't mean you are necessarily working. It's not unusual for children to learn the family business from an early age. And reflexively picking up the handgun hidden below the counter in the shop doesn't make it your gun.

What a load of crock ED..you said this; "And reflexively picking up the handgun hidden below the counter in the shop doesn't make it your gun."
A 13 yo kid DOES NOT reflexively pick up a gun!! Good grief man!!

Tell that to this young lady, her mother and her sister. I think you meant to start by saying: ''In my experience . . .''

A 13 year old child should not legally have access of any kind, reflexively or not, to a gun.

Various articles indicated the child was in the store alone, correct or not ?? Otherwise why is the child defending and wrestling the attacker and not the adult ??

It's probably a matter of their positions in the shop relative to the gunman, and their varying reactions. No everybody fits the hero model. I'd pick the 13-year-old first on my team. (no knowledge of whether or not the gun was loaded.) As with President Obama and Abbottabad, every breaking news story changes - sometimes substantially - as more information comes to light.
