PHUKET'S strong tourism numbers have returned, says the President of the Southern Region branch of the Thai Hotels Association, Suchart Hirankanokkul.
He says the dip in December - apparently triggered by Europe's continuing poor economic performance, a tsunami scare, and the rising baht - left the Phuket figure for average occupancy at 75.2 percent, with Phang Nga at 52 percent and Krabi at 62 percent.
January for Phuket appeared likely to come in at 78-80 percent, roughly comparable with last year's 79 percent. Phang Nga was expected to hit 85 percent while Krabi was anticipating 79 percent.
The boost in travellers from Russia especially was likely to take Phuket's rate for February to 88 percent, a dramatic rise on last year's 68 percent, when political problems in Bangkok had begun to surface.
Despite ups and downs, 2010 was a strong year for tourism on Phuket, he said.
