A man wanted for staging an armed robbery on Phuket has surrendered at a police station in his home province. Piyawoot Darapai, 33, confessed and donned a mask of the kind he wore in the Patong robbery.

Original Report

PHUKET: Police on Phuket are closing in on a man who used a fake gun to hold up a convenience store in Patong 11 days ago.

The wanted man is Piyawoot Darapai, 33. He was identified from security camera footage as the person who covered his face with a mask to raid a 7-Eleven in Patong's Nanai Road at 3.30am on May 16.

The armed bandit escaped with 1900 baht in cash.

An arrest warrant was issued on May 23 and a raid on Khun Piyawoot's apartment near the 7-Eleven in Patong turned up the hooded jacket, the mask and the plastic replica gun used in the stickup.

Phuket Police Commander Major General Chote Chawanwiwat said: ''Now that the identity of the robber has been confirmed, we expect to make an arrest soon.''
