The dead man, with 'Rocke 9' tattooed along his left forearm, has a deep head wound that officers think was probably a killer blow.
Police are calling for anyone who knows the man to identify him so it can be firmly established whether he is Asian or Caucasian.
As he is slightly built, police think the likelihood is that the man is Asian.
With his body now at Vachira Phuket Hosptial, chances are that he will not be swept out to sea again.
However, that's what happened the first time the body was found.
The first call to police came at 4pm yesterday when the man's body was spotted off Racha Yai, a popular day-trip tourist destination about 40 minutes by speedboat from Phuket.
Before police arrived, though, the body floated away, only to be rediscovered at 2pm today on the sand at Patao Island.
Officers from Phuket's Chalong Police Station were able to begin their investigation by finding a savage wound to the man's head.
Dressed in jeans and a horizontally striped shirt, the man also had a band on his left wrist, as well as the distinctive tattoo on his forearm.
Investigators say the body could have been in the water for up to a week.
we wont be surprised if that savage head wound proves to be a propeller be no less surprised when they list the cause of death as drowning.
