One of the men is booked at Chalong Police Station last night

Phuket Police Arrest Five in Happy Bar for Gambling

Thursday, March 8, 2012
PHUKET: An Australian, a Frenchman and three Thai women were arrested last night in a police raid on a bar in Chalong, a southern district of Phuket.

Neighbors tipped off officers after loud noise was heard coming from the Happy Bar in Moo 9 just before midnight.

The five told police they were ''bored'' because the bar was closed and decided to play cards.

Bars across Phuket were closed yesterday to mark Makha Bucha Day, one of the special festivals in the Buddhist calendar, when drinking alcohol is banned nationwide.

Police found Australian Wayne Christopher Palmer, 42, Jeremy Julien Allemant, 32, Wiparat Prikatok, 23, Jirawan Chaisang, 20, and Kamlai Paikatok, 42, playing cards and gambling, officers said.

The five were taken back to Chalong Police Station and booked.

'Tip of the Iceberg'. You can see this in almost any bar in low season & when the bars are quiet, even in high season. Cards, dominos, etc! Not really life threatening, is it? Maybe the police could have better things to do with their time.

Sorry Logic and Graham but if police ignore the small crimes then it is only a small step until they ignore the big ones.
Laws may be wrong or dumb but the role of police is enforcement not judgement.
I view action on small crimes as a pointer that maybe a new police regime will start to have a beneficial effect on all crime.
But then again I am a wishful thinker at times and only a cynic part time.

Oh no, this terrible crime, may lead them to commit murder, take drugs or kill their girlfriends and leave them in wheely-bins. Oh no the sin of a deck of cards. Did not Chris De Burgh sign a song about Jesus playing cards with the Devil to win souls in Spanish Train. Must be happening here too now?

I am the person in the photo, I wasn't even playing cards , I was in the room visiting one of the girls, I was arrested because I was in the room, so I went for accessory. and they make me out to be the main culprit. what a joke. and all the girls where playing for was 20 baht if that. shouldn't the police be out trying to stop the drug problems and murders and theft that is a major problem in phuket? what a joke.
