PHUKET: A young man aged about 20 drowned today in the large lagoon at Karon, on Phuket's west coast.
The man was picnicking with friends alongside the pond, said a Phuket Kusoldharm Foundation paramedic.
''They had started early for their Sunday outing and had a bit to drink,'' the paramedic said.
''There were seven or eight of them, enjoying the picnic. Nobody noticed he was missing until it was too late.''
The man, discovered in the water about 11.40am, could not be revived. His body was taken to Patong Hospital.
Drownings are reportedly being reduced on Phuket with more lifeguards now employed at beaches.
Phuket's Public Health office no longer releases monthly updates. The latest total for the year to May showed just five drownings to that point, half the number for the same period in the previous year.
However, eight tourist drownings were recorded at Phuket's west coast beaches between mid-May and mid-July.
