Tuk-tuks need a repaint for trust-trust, suggests a tourist panel

Phuket 'Needs White Tuk-Tuks'

Monday, September 12, 2011
PHUKET: Tuk-tuk drivers should attend seminars designed to make them understand Phuket's need to be seen as a safe and secure destination for tourists, the Phuket Governor's advisors on tourism suggested today.

Another suggestion was that tuk-tuks that met higher standards of quality service should be painted white and remain the only ones painted white, the Phuket City meeting heard.

The idea for painting the approved tuk-tuks white came from the vice president of the Pacific Asia Travel Association last week in New Delhi when Phuket officials were on a road show, said Bhuritt Maswongssa, vice president of the Phuket Tourism Association.

Sarayuth Mallam of the PTA told the meeting at Provincial Hall in Phuket City. that everybody understood the problems associated with public transport.

It was time to look for solutions, especially following strong comments made by Austrian Ambassador Dr Johannes Peterlik at last month's honorary consuls meeting.

Khun Sarayuth said the Director of Transport on Phuket had a full understanding of the issue and could oversee better controls designed to weed out the bad tuk-tuk and taxi drivers from the good.

''Black'' illegal taxis operating outside the law needed to be put off the roads, he said. Many were driven on Phuket by people not from Phuket, he said. They could simply drive off the island.

Khun Sarayuth recommended that police at checkpoints all over Phuket should pull over cars containing tourists so officers could check whether or not they were authorised taxis or ''black'' taxis.

Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha listened to the views of the advisors on the tuk-tuks and taxis and a range of other issues for three hours today.

WE don't need nor want tuk tuks period!! What is the point for painting them white ffs? Get rid of them or get rid of tourism to Phuket, ok?

Have you been elected to office or are you just talking for yourself and a friend or two when you say 'we,' Dun?

This has got to be a joke... White tuk-tuks? And don't tell me the driver will have a white suit with angel wings on the back too. Welcome to tuk-tuk heaven. We guarantee we won't beat you or steal your money.

as for the so called "black Taxis". Coming to Phuket for many years, I got only good experience with them. mostly very friendly drivers and fair rates. Not to mention the safety standards of a real car. They already got everything we want from local tuk tuks. Put THEM off the road ? smart move !

Suggestion: for the drivers who undertake the training, offer them a low interest loan to acquire a regular taxi meter, like the ones in Bangkok, or actually any international tourist destination. Scrap those insecure and polluting red bins.

Am I dreaming? Yes... After so many years here, I am losing interest in tuk-tuk stories: only speak, no action... From now on, I will better be out for beers and some nice looking wallet-emptier!

Yes, strong actions. Paint tuk-tuks white.

'Black' taxis, white tuk-tuks. Is white the new black?

The drivers need to be punished and made to install meters. Those are the only effective measures and the only way the problem of their continued criminality and thuggery will be eradicated.

There are good and bad drivers. Only the bad deserve to be ''punished.''

Hallelujah ! There are too many tuk-tuks and taxis, all chasing a finite number of fares. The illegal 'black plate' taxis are STEALING the livelihood of licensed taxis. If this simple fact was pointed out to the licensed taxis, maybe they would be helped to drive off the island. Certainly in the West, a licensed taxi would not tolerate illegals, yet here, 'most' of the taxis at established businesses and resorts are illegal. Have a look at Central Festival ! They even have a counter there ! Get rid of the illegals, fit meters, and the licensed taxis can make a fair living whilst charging a reasonable fare.

Like elsewhere in the world Phuket needs a regulated taxi service with license issued bye the government. It's the only way to control the standards and numbers of the cars, and no pirate... oops, mean private organisation should be able to issue and control licenses.
Both drivers and cars should be certified, and those who don't meet the standards will be cut off.
Part of the certification is also economical requirements, safety ++
Today it seems like everybody that can drive and have a car tries to get a part in the profitable taxi business in Phuket.
There should also be ONE common phone number to call, and drivers should be able to pick up passengers wherever they are.
With limitation in the number of licenses there should be enough work and the taxis can maintain a decent price level far from today's extortionate prices.
But the problem might be that the drivers are to lazy to work normally and maybe prefer a few trips a day getting them an income many times the average income in Thailand.

To allow taxi drivers to bully their way into earning more than teachers with degrees is an indictment of Phuket's flawed standards. What will the kids grow up wanting to be?

"as for the so called "black Taxis". Coming to Phuket for many years, I got only good experience with them."

I guess you don't often try to park in Patong. It is the black taxis that claim most of vacant spots on Ratuthit Road for their exclusive use and threaten you with harm if you try to park there.

If tuk tuk and taxi drivers can beat tourists (and other drivers), blockade roads and vandalise property, only to be asked to turn up at the local police station at their leisure to be spoken to in rather cross terms...then what exactly are the odds of anyone enforcing the rule against a non-accredited driver painting his tuk tuk white?

There is no role for tuk tuks in a modern future for Phuket, IF a modern future is what officials and residents of the Island really want.

The "we" I speak of, are the many commentators both Thai and Farang, both in and outside of Phuket. Having said and commentated that the Tuk Tuk drivers, by their behavior, have seriously sullied the image of Phuket abroad. Tuk tuk are no longer needed, install a Baht Bus System and gone are the little red, yellow and eM's.

I have a very simple solution to the whole tuk tuk/taxi problem on Phuket: Only allow Thai women as drivers. NO men allowed. Problems will be solved!
Guaranteed!
