PHUKET: Three large projects for Phuket have been chosen as the ones to present to Thailand's Cabinet when it meets on Phuket later this month - including the somewhat mysterious Phuket ''green'' project.
The two at the top of the list and their expected cost are the Phuket light rail and transport network (25 billion baht) and the Patong Tunnel (5.5 billion baht) with Phuket ''green'' (175 million) as the third project.
The three big projects and a range of other, smaller infrastructure projects were discussed yesterday when the Andaman group of provinces - Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang and Ranong - met at Provincial Hall in Phuket City.
Officials from the National Economic and Social Development Board were on hand to offer their opinions.
Most of the smaller projects nominated for Phuket yesterday revolve around the obvious need for the island to become self-reliant for water. Storing the huge amounts that fall during the monsoon season for use in the dry season is at the heart of a solution.
The list is: Underpass or overpass for the bypass t-intersection, 500 million baht; dam at Rajabhat University, 10 million baht; Dam near Saphan Hin, 15 million baht; Bang Neaw Dam expansion, 49 million; Clearance of canals system to prevent floods, 20 million baht; Maintenance of old buildings, nine million baht; Water supply system, 100 million baht; new Provincial Hall, 450 million baht; History of Phuket at Thalang, five million baht; Developing the transport system at the airport, 300 million baht.

There has been much debate over many years ref the need for a Patong tunnel. Most agree it would only add to traffic congestion. Instead, why not build multi-storey car parks outside Patong with a decent public transport (bus not tuk tuks) system into town to reduce traffic congestion & car parking problems.
