A bus crash victim, believed to be Serkan Tinc, after the fatal weekend collision

Phuket Honeymooners Among Victims of Minibus Carnage

Monday, March 5, 2012
PHUKET: A Turkish couple celebrating their honeymoon were among the victims of the weekend collision north of Phuket.

The bride was killed and the groom escaped with abrasions.

Narcissus Tinc, 26, like her husband Serkan a member of the cabin crew of Turkish Airlines, died instantly with three other day-tripping tourists when a pickup carrying fish crashed into their minibus.

The couple had postponed their honeymoon after getting married last year, Turkish media reports. They were just too busy to make their romantic getaway to Phuket until recently.

The minibus was returning to Phuket after taking the holidaymakers on a day trip to connect with a boat to the Similan islands, a popular spot for divers and snorkellers.

Back in Turkey, the family of the young couple were distraught on hearing what had happened.

It is believed the bride's twin brother may be travelling to Phuket to help her young husband, say Turkish reports.

A Ukranian tourist and Russians Julia Krinitsyna, 26, from Chita and Vladimir Serbakov, 30, from Novosibirsk were also killed.

Vladimir Serbakova's father, Alexander Serbakov, is now in Phuket City's Mission Hospital recovering from a broken arm and broken ribs. Four other patients were treated and allowed to go.

The driver of the pickup, which collided with the minibus about 6.30pm on Saturday near the regional hub of Tai Muang, has been charged.

Gee wizz, this is just too sad. I thought people came here to celebrate getting married and to start happy lives together, not bury their damn spouses on arrival. This is indeed a sick society of road users here. My sugestion, police the roads everywhere, give out hefty fines and stop looking the other way. If not, get police from Bangkok here who can actually do Police work.

Again a photograph depicting the ultimate grief of a human being. Thank you for the strong emotion that your photographer captured. Our deep, deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of those lost to us. This carange has got to stop. Phuket is dying a very fast death because of this. Let me tell you, this is close enough to Phuket, for the world media and tourists, to think it is part of Phuket. I hope our lady PM will use a helicopter to get around here, it just maybe a far safer alternative than the roads.

A tragedy indeed that shouldn't of happened.

In another story you say that both parties of an accident are always charged, but one is normally then found guilty and then the other is let off.

Do we know who/which one will be found guilty, or is it in the investigation stage. You also said in another story that the mini-bus driver ran away, which normally means guilt because the pick-up driver remained at the scene.

Can you shed some more light on this case with the points I made?

Police determine the rights and wrongs, case by case. Leaving the scene is never a surefire indication of guilt, just as staying is not proof of innocence. Unless police believed both parties were in the wrong, both parties would not be charged.

Wow, i do not want to come Phuket. Damn, too many road crash, too many people died by traffic small town in Phuket, if you Phuket people do not attention your road, then who take care ?

Phuket's road toll is being reduced year by year, Nagra. All the recent multiple crashes involving tourists took place off Phuket.

ed yes some these accidents did take place off the island. but anyone that has been in one these mini vans heading to or from the island can tell you these mini van drivers drive with no care or responsibility.

it really is a simple solution of enforcement, accountability and leaders to do something if they wanted to.

i think it would be good though to get the names of the companies that are involved. possible? or not wanting to name companies?

In this case it was actually the driver of the pickup who was found by police to be responsible. For all you know, the person driving the minibus could be the best minibus driver on Phuket. There are some good ones . . . just not enough of them.

Heartbreaking. I can not begin to know how this young man must feel.
I pray that he has family and friends who will take care of him and help him through the awful days, months or years to come. R.I.P
Come on Thailand - you can do better than this! Stop the carnage!

Admittingly technically speaking all these latest tragedies happened off Phuket but in reality in all 3 instances it was people either travelling off or to Phuket or both.

I know PW is not dismissing them as non-Phuket related but I hope local authorities don't write them off as unrelated to Phuket.

Way too often drivers on or off Phuket see it as a Grand Prix race where being overtaken or being slower is seen as loss of face and that honor must be restored at any cost.

The cost is starting to mount.

Please, slow down.

Yes, the point is that all 14 of these victims had either been tourists on Phuket or visitors to Phuket (for a funeral.) The roads around the region have been improving. The driving has not. On any Sunday, the roads of Krabi and Phang Nga are dotted with single-vehicle crashes that are all attributable to speed or carelessness. Education is, sadly, the biggest deficiency in Thailand - and when it comes to schooling people about road safety, the lack of it needlessly costs the lives of locals and tourists.
