Water splashes as traffic ploughs through roads in southern Phuket today

Phuket Gets a Bit Wet, Just Like London and Sydney: Photo Special

Saturday, July 7, 2012
PHUKET: It was difficult not to shed a bit of sympathy today for visiting tourists as storms on Phuket delivered floods and made many roads difficult to use.

But it was the same in those other big urban spreads either side of Phuket - floods in London and heavy rain in Sydney.

Dry spots may be hard to find anywhere this weekend.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone was advised not to attend the British Grand Prix qualifying session at Silverstone, near London, because it could have taken him up to five hours to get there by road.

That may make people struggling though water in Chalong feel a bit better. The good news, too, for those facing floods in Phuket City was that low tide meant the water flowed away with greater ease.

We report too that Sydney people fleeing the wet there for Phuket shouldn't be too grumpy.

A comment came from one reader, Dom, probably typical of many tourists: ''Sitting in our hotel room waiting for flight off the island on Monday. Never seen rain like it. Hoped for 9 days of sun on way to Europe, but it's rained almost every minute of our stay here. :((''

At least the temperature is better and it's possible to get around in singlet, shorts and sandals, not greatcoat and galoshes.

Forecasters - not mean people by nature, just inclined to be inclement at this time of year - predict more rain, but easing in Sydney, London and Phuket for the bright new week.

Have a nice trip, Dom.

Sat next to young couple from Armenia on the flight to Phuket today - they expressed surprise that it was raining. Nobody told them it was monsoon season!

Thanks Ed! And my earlier comment about safety concerns was probably a bit alarmist. People have been as welcoming and friendly as ever to us, and we haven't felt any security concerns at all really. It may have rained, but we have still had lots of fun, lots of great food and shopped up a storm. Pun intended.

Thanks Phuket, you rock, and we'll be back. Dom (Auckland, NZ)

I remember being in a minibus about 8 years ago and would have been better off on a small raft. The d@mned thing staled on the way to the airport to boot. Even about four years ago there was some serious rain for long periods of time. I looked at the radar and the whole 240km circle was filled with rain. Until last year there seemed to be a rather dry period but it seems that the monsoon is came back with a vengeance. Personally, if I don't have to go out in it, I kind of like the rain.

I hope the people will learn some day, that it is not a good idea to drive fast in flooded areas. While Nanai River was still an issue, one stupid Pick-Up driver coming from ahead threw a big wave at my car, resulting in a 100.000 Baht engine repair. I just could not turn the engine off fast enough to keep it from inhaling water and boom - engine blocked.

And so the downpours and floods continue in Phuket. With all this rain it is amazing that parts of Patong have been without mains water for the last 7 days.....yes really !!! How can this be happening ? Surely there are ample stocks ! There is clearly a major problem somewhere....
