PHUKET: Phuket did itself proud tonight. The rain? Yes, there was a little. The mud? Yes, there was some of that too, around the outside of Surakul Stadium in Phuket City.
But the Phuket show for the Phuket Games 2012 was an impressive two-and-a-half-hour display of youth and energy, two things that are plentiful on Phuket.
Here's the view in our extensive photo album of the event from the ground and from the stadium, taken by two Phuketwan photographers.
They were among the thousands of spectators who enjoyed every minute of tonight's opening ceremony.
There was culture and pomp. Dancer danced, singers sang, leaders led, and there was even a special appearance by Phuket's heroines - or at least, a couple of actresses playing their parts.
Phuket singers from 'The Star,' Pavida ''Silvy'' Moriji and Juruwat ''Dom'' Cheriwaram, were there. So too were Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha and Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation President Paiboon Upatising.
The athletes waved as they marched past, the crowds cheered. Drummers drummed. Torchers torched.
And now, it's Phuket's turn. Out to impress will be contestants from all 77 provinces, from Sunday until June 5, in 40 sports. On with the show.
Wonderful photographs and looking at the smiling faces, a very good display it must have been. Well done to you all, may you all win.
Thank you Chutima Sidasathian.
