Phuket to Gain 'I Am a Camera' Para Police Force

Phuket to Gain 'I Am a Camera' Para Police Force

Tuesday, December 14, 2010
PHUKET police are planning an ''I Am a Camera'' scheme to involve volunteers who will report when they see suspicious events, especially at night.

The scheme is the idea of Colonel Wanchai Eakpornpit, the Superintendent of Phuket City Police Station, whose helmet safety campaign strategy is now being adopted across Thailand.

Under his new idea to help Phuket police cope with low manning levels, volunteers will be asked to sign up as ''I Am a Camera'' force members and assigned code identities.

When one of the volunteers spots a suspicious happening, he or she will call a central telephone number, give their code and report the event. If the sighting is considered serious, a police motorcycle patrol will be dispatched immediately.

''We need new ideas to improve policing around the clock, but especially at night,'' Colonel Wanchai told Phuketwan yesterday. Talks on the introduction of the scheme are to begin next week, he said.

Colonel Wanchai's strategy for helmet safety has been adopted by the Public Health department nationally. It will spread from Phuket City to all of Phuket from January 1, with plans for 300,000 free helmets to be introduced on the island and in Bangkok and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Will the volunteers be covered by gov't insurance? Surely it won't be long before a volunteer pokes his nose into some criminal's business, then gets his nose savagely beaten by said criminal.

Unless these volunteers have such protection and safety nets in place, this is a foolish and selfish plan that will put "volunteers" into the category of "foolish victims".

Did East Germany suffer from a chronic shortage of police?

Is this not the same as we have here in England crime stoppers, If you see some thing suspicious you ring the police. Those people are not insured but they get a reward if the criminal is convicted.

Anonymous denunciation might be a good step to eradicate crimes in Phuket but most of case involve corruption cases against civil servants and local administrations.
Also, law-enforcers before sending any criminal case to court look more how much money they may get from wrongdoers one way or another way; so large fat fish will be off the hook anyway.
What would be much more useful would be to have official promotions for civil servants in case those good Samaritans denounce corrupted wrongdoers in the Thai administration.

Denunciation is not an answer to anything. It usually leads to personal vendettas and violence. The objective should be to educate people about the harm that corruption causes the entire community, and to reform the system through education and awareness. Honest citizens should notify police about more obvious crimes as a matter of course.
