Phuket marina manager Simon Grant loved this Phang Nga Bay view

Phuket Flotilla to Farewell Marina Manager at Sea

Tuesday, October 27, 2009
A FLOTILLA of small boats is expected to put out to sea in a fitting farewell for marina manager Simon Grant on Thursday.

''A dozen boats are booked to go,'' his friend, Adam Frost, told Phuketwan. ''Others are welcome to come, too.''

The boats, with Mr Grant's own small vessel leading the way, will leave Ao Po Grand Marina on Phuket's east coast, where he worked until his death in a motorcycle mishap late last week, between 10am and 11am.

Some of his ashes will be scattered on the water in Phang Nga Bay. The rest will be taken to Australia for his two young children.

''He loved his children, his motorcycles, and the sea,'' said Mr Frost, who runs Seal Superyachts and met Mr Grant about three years ago.

Having ridden his newly-purchased Honda Africa Twin 750cc down the 1700 kilometres from northern Thailand just two weeks ago, Mr Grant crashed within a few kilometres of the marina last Thursday afternoon.

No other vehicle appears to have been involved.

''Simon was very popular in the boating community,'' Mr Frost said. ''He was a rugged, solid guy. There was no down side to Simon. His passions in life were his children, his motorcycles and his work.''

Mr Grant's younger brother Nick and wife Julie have come from Zimbabwe for the cremation and farewell.

''Simon was raised in Zimbabwe then married in Australia,'' Mr Frost said. ''He had both Australian and British citizenship.''

Mr Frost said his friend loved to travel and was for many years in his youth a roadie with the Rolling Stones. He'd said he'd visited 360 towns and cities in 34 countries.

He frequently went on motorcycle rides in northern Thailand, and made many friends there. Going to Malaysia this weekend for the motorcycle grand prix was something he had been planning.

About a dozen of his closest friends and family attended a private farewell ceremony at Wat Thareu yesterday. Flowers may be left there on Tuesday until 9pm, when the temple closes.

The cremation takes place at the temple from 11am on Wednesday. It will be followed by a wake at the Quarterdeck restaurant at the Ao Po Grand Marina, at which anyone who wishes will be able to say a few words.

Friends are composing a 'Book of Memories of Simon' for his children. All contributions are welcome.
