Original Report

SIMON GRANT, the genial manager of the Ao Po Grand Marina, died in hospital after a motorcycle mishap yesterday afternoon.

His boss and good friend, marina managing director Kasern Chiarasomboon, told Phuketwan today that Mr Grant had just taken delivery of a new Honda 750.

Details of the circumstances of the mishap have yet to be revealed, but Mr Grant, 45, apparently came off the motorcycle as he drove away from the marina, on Phuket's east coast, about 3pm, near the air park.

He was taken to Bangkok Phuket Hospital in Phuket City, where he died about 6.30pm.

Mr Grant, who was single, was wearing full protective gear, Khun Kasern said. He preferred to ride the motorcycle rather than take the marina's four-wheel drive.

Reports said Mr Grant's motorcycle was virtually unmarked.

''We will miss him enormously,'' Khun Kasern said. ''He started work here in August 2008 and we had a mutual respect and liking for each other.''

Khun Kasern said Mr Grant's younger brother was on his way from Zimbabwe to Phuket.

Mr Grant spent a lot of time living and working in Australia before taking up the job at the Ao Po Grand Marina, where he was the only expat employee.

The Ao Po Grand Marina was Phuketwan's Phuket Innovation of the Year for 2008.

I met Simon a year ago when I moved my boat to the Marina. He was one of the most genial, friendly and courteous people I have ever met.
He will be sadly missed by all the boaties at the Marina.
Simon, RIP

"Mishap"? Your writer makes it sound as if the late Mr Grant merely stubbed his toe.

Editor:This is hardly the time or place to discuss our word style. ''Ao Po marina manager Simon Grant came off his new Honda 750 and died in hospital''. We prefer 'mishap' because 'accident' implies no fault or blame. (Mishap: bad luck, mischance, misadventure)

A shock to everyone who knew him I'm sure. I was only joking with him in his office on Tuesday about football, he was a keen Chelsea supporter.

Simon my man where ever you are. Keep your left arm straight, keep your eye on the ball and take it whichever way you can get it.

Going to miss you buddy. Hope they serve that New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc that you enjoy in your new spot. Rest well my friend.

Last time I saw you was by chance in Gatwick airport where we had a glass of champagne and smoked salmon. There will be plenty of that where you have gone. Happy memories from the St.Dunstan years in London. Our thoughts are with your family.
