Phuket Expat Deaths: Police List Reveals More Drownings than Crash Fatalities

Monday, March 11, 2013
PHUKET: Police on Phuket have released a list of deaths among expat and tourists on Phuket dating back to September last year.

The list, compiled by the office of the Phuket Police Commander in Phuket City, is usually provided to honorary consuls when they meet with Phuket's governor.

Meetings once took place every three months but no meeting has been held since September last year.

The gathering is seen as a forum for open discussion about issues that affect Phuket's 2.5 million international tourists and residents.

A surprisingly high number of drownings are evident from the latest list, especially in January. Usually, motorcycle crashes claim more lives of tourists and expats than drownings.

As Phuketwan has already reported, there was one day in Patong in January in which four expat deaths were recorded by police.

Conclusions are difficult to make from the Phuket police list. However, the high number of drownings in January, usually a relatively calm month for seas in Phuket's high season, is unusual.

Trends concerning death risks on Phuket have become difficult to assess since the Phuket Public Health Department ceased issuing updated monthly data on the road toll and drownings in April last year.

No annual figures have been released for 2012.

Phuketwan's own reports show that the period between mid-May and mid-July posed extreme dangers at Phuket's popular west coast beaches.

The drownings of eight tourists were recorded with the arrival of the monsoon season.

honor the dead by writing their names right. it should be 'Hans-Dieter' not 'Ns-Dieter' which would mean Nazi-Dieter.

We publish the list as supplied by the Phuket police. Transliterations are always going to be flawed. Some readers do not understand the difference between the words ''media'' and ''miracle.'' Your assumption is not one many readers would make.

Your ideal holiday island appears to be a place where people do not die, ratatouille. Please let us know when you find it. Death tends to ignore wishful thinking everywhere.

It's the largest island in Thailand, with 2.5 million international visitors and an expat population who lead active outdoor lives. You may sit in front of the television day and night, ratatouille, but the range of adventures undertaken by others is wide. A sizeable number of expats are 50-plus. And the ages of many of the people on the list indicates their deaths are not unexpected or surprising. Drownings and motorcycle crashes are preventable, though.

@ ED "Drownings and motorcycle crashes are preventable, though" whats ever the Reasons the average still high for such of destination have around 500 000 Permanent Resident and 2.5 Million a year. do the List compile suicide ? FYI ED living in PKT 3 years if we compared other island in a Work not sure the average are quiet Higher like PKT FYI ED Thailand as the most higher Rate of Foreigner Died ! all Best cheers

A few years ago, when there were no figures reported, there were scaremongers who used exaggeration and rumor to make Phuket sound like an unsafe place for everyone. That's why accurate figures and lists are so important. If the figures were excessively high, embassies would be asking why, and you'd hear about it. Their main concerns are about needless, preventable drownings and motorcycle crashes. With awareness and proper protection, the numbers of deaths can be reduced. Suicides are in the list. The real problem is in holiday destinations that don't reveal their figures. There is no cause for alarm, ratatouille. Stay calm.

Well, more and more poor or non - swimmers in the water, obviously... another indication that tourists coming to Phuket aren't the same as in the past. Chinese, Russians and Indians are definitely not waterborne.

And many resorts still fail to recognise that providing safety information is their shared responsibility.

R.I.P. For the Dead People, hoera for the List. Thank you PhuketWan, for your consistent insisting.

This list is incomplete. A dear friend of mine sadly passed away in Phuket in October 2012 but is not listed here. I wonder if there are others family and friends not listed here as well. We remember them.

Editor Comment:

This is a police list of deaths in which they had some involvement. There are probably other cases where people died at home or in hospital without the need for a police presence. It would be possible for authorities to combine and compile a complete list.
