Immigration police acting on a tip-off confronted Stephen Peering, 45, outside Kokchang Mansion in Thaina Road, Karon, about 11.30am.
When the officers went to check his passport in a room on the first floor, one of the detectives thought he smelled a drug.
A search of the room produced a small quantity of marijuana in a drawer.
Mr Peering entered Thailand on February 7, 2011 and his visa expired one month later. His visa has not been renewed.
He is likely to face court over the drugs and the overstay, with deportation the likely outcome.
Officers at Karon Police Station were interviewing Mr Peering this afternoon.
Yesterday volunteers from Thalang District, overseen by district chief Supot Chakrit, arrested Niran Yokjalarn, 58, who was in possession of 90 ya Bah methamphetamine tablets and 5.3 grams of ya ice.
He confessed to selling the drugs to residents around the Srisoonthorn district.
Just one more reason not to break the local law.
All it takes is a quick phone call from someone you've offended and off you go to immigration jail and Deportation Airlines.
You sit there until you can pay your overstay fine and arrange a flight back to your home country. A simple visa run outside Thailand will not cut it at that stage anymore.
A task that is mighty complicated from behind the bars and with no money. Some linger there for months.
Regardless of what you may think of Thai laws, don't break them. It's not our call.
