Phuket beach party at Karon in 2009 . . . now every beach wants to party

Phuket Beach Party to 'Aid Tourists in Trouble'

Thursday, February 11, 2010
SATURDAY night's first regular Patong beach party will be a test for the concept of music on the sand ''until late'' for the benefit of tourists.

Profits from the monthly parties are to go towards a fund aimed to support tourists who find themselves in trouble on Phuket.

What amounts to ''trouble'' and how the fund will be managed remains unclear, but officials gave reassurances to questioning journalists tonight.

The ''Tourists Assistance Fund Foundation'' was initiated by organisers Rakchat Management, a private company, and former Kathu police chief Colonel Grissak Songmoonnark.

A media release handed out at Patong Tessaban this evening said: ''The proceeds from the sales of beers from the Patong Beach Party will be donated to the fund.

''The fund will be used to assist tourists who encounter mishaps suchas accidents, lost of life [sic] or other financial problems.''

Details of how the fund will be overseen and administered transparently were not readily available tonight.

The monthly Patong beach party has been proposed to emulate the ''success'' of the Koh Phangnan full moon parties.

Full moon parties on Koh Phangnan have been widely condemned for encouraging drug-taking and binge drinking.

The debate about whether public beaches on Phuket should be used for parties continues, with residents at Karon and other beaches unhappy with regular noisy nights that sometimes go beyond 2am.

The media release that accompanied this evening's media conference said under the heading: ''Management of Tourists Assistance Fund Foundation.

''The fund will be managed by the mayor of Patong City, the district chief of Kathu and superintendent of Kathu police station together with Rakchat Management. In the board advisors will be Tourist Police Division, Member of Parliament and leaders of various social association [sic] in a manner of transparency and beneficial to the Tourists.

''We welcome you to the first Patong Beach Party to be held on Saturday, 13th of February 2010 from 7pm to 2am. We look forward to your support to make Patong Beach Party a success by participating in a night filled with fun and excitement.''

It's understood Rakchat Management set up and continues to run similar monthly functions in Pattaya.

The monthly beach parties are likely to raise questions about whether the event promotes the right kind of activities on Phuket, and whether they could actually lead to more tourists getting into trouble.

"The fund will be managed by the mayor of Patong City, the district chief of Kathu and superintendent of Kathu police station " I'm sure they'll be able to 'manage' it very well!

Is it just me .... or wouldn't you rather your "donations" helped the underprivileged Thai people rather that tourists who are too stupid to pay for travel insurance?

They say charity starts at home. I go with all the comments by Mister Ree, rich and Bobby Brown. Bobby yes, the money should go to the locals who live here, not some half arsed twit who will leave after a short period and go home to mommy country.
As for making matters worse, yes it will do just that, put Phuket and Patong in the cesspool of sleaze.

Stupid idea, that will bring all the drug people to phuket for that party, and people will die from drug overdose and road accidents will be up for sure. %10 of the money will go to the fund the rest will go into the pocket's of everyone. If tourists want money they should be asking the tourism authority for money, no need to start a drug and alcohol disco. I agree if the tourists had insurance then their would be no problem's.

Way to clean up Phuket's image. This is a very dumb idea and a massive step in the wrong direction. Full Moon type tourists only spend money on alcohol and drugs. Is this what you really want? Come on, just come out and admit that anything that generates money is fine with the "powers that be".

OMG, what a bunch of snivelers. I assume you all live in Patong, was it not the party atmosphere, beautiful people and non-stop action that drew you there? Yes, Thai people in need deserve our financial help and especially our respect, but out of the many visitors Phuket has annually, some will experience tragedy, and may need financial ssistance. It is so much better to have a plan and funds earmarked for that eventuality. It has been my experience that Thai people will help an individual in trouble from their own time, tables and pockets, even if it causes hardship for them. It is better to have something in place.

Why not to have a full moon party at Nai Harn Beach in Rawai which would be the best place in Phuket to have it.
We definitly need to have a place for monthly full-moon parties as many youngsters and foreigners leaves Phuket to go to Phangan Island every month costing to local tourism industry a big income lost.
- No nearby village; so noise would not be a big problem.
- Easy control by police to stop drug users ans sellers with 2 roads to access the beach.
- Use of the salted lagoon during the monsoon period.

Dear Doretta, no, I don't live in Patong! Thanks for stereotyping all foreigners... assuming that every foreigner comes/came here for alcohol and sex. Sorry to bust your bubble, but I came to Thailand for Thai culture, nature and the wonderful climate.

I couldn't agree more. If someone can afford to come here for a holiday then they can afford the insurance.
maybe they could use the funds raised to pay the fines for the tourists who will inevitably be arrested on drugs charges at these events.
send them back to koh phangnan!!
