PHUKET: A drunken adventure in darkness at Patong beach led to the drowning of a bar worker early today, says a Phuket lifeguard.
Patong chief lifeguard Viroj Sawaugphol was called to the beach at 6.15am and with others recovered the body of 19-year-old Suksan Jaiyen, from Phuket.
The young worker from the Superman bar in Soi Tun joined three workmates in a few drinks then went to cool off in the surf at the beach.
''Apparently he was knocked off his feet by a wave and that was the last anyone saw of him,'' Khun Viroj said. ''Of course, in the dark, there are no visible warning signs.
''We don't post the red flags in the sand until we start work after daylight.''
The men went into the water in front of Loma Park.
While there are dangerous rips at some Phuket beaches during the monsoon season, Khun Viroj said the surf wasn't particularly dangerous last night.
''It's unusual to have a Thai drown,'' he said. ''Most victims are overseas tourists.''

...Drunk...Going for a swim in the monsoon season high surf and currents...and with jeans on...which only add quite a bit of weight to your body making the struggle even more difficult...not a very smart move...RIP
