A mobile telephone traces the bag snatcher who stole it on Phuket

Phuket Bag Snatcher Traced Speedily by Stolen Telephone

Wednesday, April 24, 2013
PHUKET: A bag snatcher released from jail just two days before he went back to his crimes on Phuket was caught quickly yesterday because of the satellite app in his victim's mobile telephone.

Supada Tonsuwan, 29, celebrated his release from prison in Songkhla and hastened to catch up with his girlfriend on Phuket.

Yesterday about noon he tried to snatch the bag of Yuwannadha Sanprom, 38, in Vichitsongkran Road, central Phuket. She fought back and was slightly injured, but kept her possessions.

Frustrated, Khun Supada staged a second bag-snatch not far from the first attempt, grabbing the bag belonging to Sasiwimon Peachlerm, 22. He rode off with the bag, which contained her Samsung Galaxy and Apple iPhone.

Khun Sasiwimon told Tungthong police that the iPhone could be tracked. Sure enough, police were able to arrest Khun Supada in a rented apartment in Patong after Khun Sasiwimon spotted her attacker's red and black Scoopi motorcycle outside.

Khun Supada confessed and was in tears on the telephone - not the one belonging to Khun Sasiwimon - telling a cousin how his return to bag-snatching had speedily come unstuck.

Not just Iphones but I think that any Android phone (Galaxy) etc can be traced but you must set it up using a google mail account. It works globally and well worth doing. I had my phone stolen by a hotel I was staying in Bali. I think that the penalty if a man steals with violence by snatching from a woman there should be harsher sentences than man to man. Cowards pick on woman as they are smaller.

@ff, did you get your phone back?

@ FF

You make good points on the application everyone should avail of.

However I don't agree with your suggestion of harsher sentences. The most important principle is that everyone is equal in front of the law.

Taking gender and size into account would open a Pandora's box and cause much more damage than the admittedly understandable suggestion you make.

2 wrongs doesn't make it right.

@Simon - The thief got a big surprise
@Stephen - Complicated subject perhaps if a Vote as taken by the general population, but I think most ladies would support it. Why should they be victims just because they are not as strong as men. This is a biological fact and therefore they should be given more protection by the law in terms of violence inflacted by men. I agree that in many other countries it would be classed as sexual descrimination but then car insurance is higher for young males than females, so is that not sexual descrimination. The good thing is that the vast majority of ladies in Phuket feel safe, even compared to wealthy countries like the US, UK etc. I am always impressed with how safe Phuket is for everyone a country with lower finances than the West for Policing especially given the amount of alcohol consumed.

@ff the fact that the thief got a big surprise could mean anything, perhaps it was his birthday and he got a nice present. The phone ff, the phone? Got it back?

@Simon perhaps the sun fell out the sky that's why he was surprised, this is not a chat room.

@FF I know that! I'm interested to know about the phone, if this tracking works, and after this post my "chat " will be gone forever! I can only assume that your procrastination answering means you didn't get it back, what colour was your new one?

First, this type of crime should have a harsher penalty, I favour Singapore's approach, the rattan across the soles of your feet. Secondly, for Android based phones, check out "Where's My Droid" on Google play store.

@Simon my presumption that you are a sarcastic and aggressive person and not very intelligent is the reason I sent the last post. Now let's drop this and stick to the article. Finally as I am good natured it does work but that all depends if it is a block of condos or an isolated house. You can also track it's movements. If it didn't not work how do you think they found the phone it this article, your not the sharpest tool in these threads are you. You don't believe PW or myself.

@FF. Beware of libelous statements towards Simon please. Penalties here are very harsh for Libel.

in tears at being caught not of remorse
what we have here is a career criminal the thai penal system taught him nothing to remedy this he should be placed in stocks in a public place and have a sign on him I steal females handbags let the girls do the rest.

@ FF

I understand what you are trying to achieve but I disagree with your proposed method.

It is not a "biological fact". There are plenty of smaller than average men and larger than average women. Saying all women are weaker than all men is just plain wrong.

This is most likely also the main reason why no country that I know of has adopted the approach you propose.

Law needs to be blind to gender, race, religion etc. I prefer to keep it that way.

Insurance is about risk groups. Nothing to do with discrimination. Older people pay more too and many with pre-existing medical conditions are flat out rejected.

You are comparing apples with tractors - just because you can find both on a farm doesn't mean they are the same.

Harsher penalties for repeat offenders, yes. Penalties based on the gender of the victim and/or perpetrator, absolutely not.
