New Year's celebrations may be a distant memory in Patong

Patong Venues to be Told To Close By 2am, Police Confirm

Wednesday, January 11, 2012
PHUKET: The closing of all bars and nightclubs on Phuket by 2am has been ordered by the Interior Minister and is likely to be extended from Phuket City to Patong as early as tomorrow.

The Superintendent of Kathu Police Station, Colonel Arayapan Pukbuakao, said today that he would be in touch with the owners of venues in and around Patong to inform them of the official order from Bangkok.

The letter from the Interior Ministry was passed on from Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha to all eight police station superintendents on Phuket this afternoon.

Colonel Arayapan urged the owners of venues to talk to police before considering their own protests over the closure order.

The colonel said he had some sympathy for the owners who stayed open past the official Phuket closing time to please tourists and to make money.

Most Western visitors to Phuket who enjoy the island's quirky nightlife are used to going out after 10pm and staying out until 3am or 4am.

Governor Tri also recognises that the law has been breached to suit the needs of tourists, and that venue owners say a 2am closure leaves them without enough of a time window to make money.

But last week's attempted murder of a well-known resort owner-manager at the Rassada Pub in the Poonpol district of Phuket City at 4.30am had given Phuket unfavorable publicity worldwide because of the presence of Hollywood star Jeremy Renner.

Governor Tri said he intended to bring the 300 illegal venues among the 800 venues on Phuket within the law. Checks on venues to make sure there are no weapons or drugs and that all employees are adults are continuing.

But isnt the law.. The actual law as opposed to whats done.. That bars outside of a couple of tiny designated entertainment areas must close at 12 ??

I sure remember that from the news flow of the Purachai social order campaign.

It's 1am in most places and 2am on Phuket.

Bars stay open for the tourists, for the bar owner to make money. illegal beach bars especially, usually tax free money. Hmmmm.. when we are tourists in Australia, UK, USA, Singapore, Hong Kong.. Tourist or not, when it comes to closing time, the venue closes.

One incident makes such waves and everything is shaped new?
The Discos in and around Bangla are mostly frequented from Tourists and Thai ladys until the morning, worked well until now, or?
When Thaksin was in power a once Muslim interior minister and another hot head interior minister stopped the spinning wheel and made early closing times.
Now again the Thaksin group in power and a small incident in a mostly from Thais frequented venue is the reason to make problems for the fun loving Tourists and the heavily invested Club owners.
Right? Phuket is no red province, one reason for the hard consequences?

Attempted murder with eight staff involved, one of them aged 17, using a tomahawk and a knife, attacking people perceived to be tourists, is hardly ''a small incident.'' Nothing to do with politics, all about savagery and lack of law enforcement.

This is progress but isn't going far enough. We need to bring it to at least 1 a.m. and preferably midnight. People will party and drink earlier in the evening and there will be fewer people getting really drunk out of their minds and as a result fewer accidents. And people like me who like to sleep early and wake up early will be able to do so without being disturbed. The night is for sleeping, not partying. You have the whole daytime to party in Phuket. 2am closing time is antisocial.

I will just have to go out earlier. I would say that there is a lot of money being spent after 2 am though, lots of bars already struggling...

Some bars will stay open past 2 AM. They will just have to pay more. Only one group will really profit from this order and it's not the bar owners.

Babushka, i think you're living in the wrong place. Try going to the countryside for what you're looking for, i'm sure you'll be very happy indeed.

Dear Editor
Please see the full picture. Millions of Tourists in the years in Patong partying.
One incident, with Thais involved in a zone used nearly only by Thais and all venues in Patong have to suffer and the Tourists taken away the decision when they have to go home?
That is right? I say its wrong and shortsighted!
The Gentleman or these Gentleman who like it quiet are in the wrong place in Patong even Phuket anyway.
Hundreds, possible Thousands of people will running around in the streets around Bangla same in Thaksin times, when they drank in front of 7/11 and Family market.
But I think the law forbids that now.
Anyway, I against restrictions, the market regulates itself.
1997/1998 under Chuan Lekpai people sat at VIENNA BAR - now TAI PAN until 7-8 AM
no big fuss!

Alfred, I am in favor of civilised drinking hours as long as the venues are run by reputable people who refuse service to drunks and who call the police at the first sign of trouble. Corrupt payments to stay open after hours undermine all laws. The owners of venues must seek change by first proving their capacity to abide by the law. ''We are giving the tourists what they want'' is not a logical argument, especially with violence on the rise.

What's the bet that hollywood disco does not close at 2am, this is something i really find hard to believe.

I am in two minds for this. I do agree Patong is a "farang" party town, but I do respect everyone else's right to enjoy their night out.

At the end of the day, it does come down to corruption of Law Enforcement Officers for NOT enforcing a law that has been there for years.

I expect this will all be blown over by the end of the month, if not sooner.

Like the parking in Patong this will last less than a week. You cannot enforce laws without the law enforcers.

If they're really serious: Just like the Ago-go bars there must be a requirement to keep the doors open lets say from 1:45 AM until 2:15 AM to show the police that everyone has left otherwise we go right back to the old way of closing the door at 2am while calling it a private party for everyone inside to stay as late as they like. (Party On)

I think not a big problem for bars, but for the discos. Most people start go there after 12 pm.
