PHUKET: A fire that was sparked by a transformer explosion caused damage estimated at 500,000 baht above a Patong restaurant early on Thursday morning.
The owner of the Aroi Seafood Restaurant, Mayavee Jaejiw, 31, said that all the evening's tourist diners had gone and the restaurant had closed when the fire broke out about 1.15am.
Early reports put the damage to the beach road restaurant at 70,000 baht to 80,000 baht but that was revised upwards later on Thursday when the full damage to the storeroom was assessed.
Strong winds fanned the flames and made it difficult to contain. Firmen on two trucks took 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
