Phuketwan reporter Chutima Sidasathian enjoys a laugh with the Navy

Navy Marks Children's Day North of Phuket With Weaponry Display

Sunday, January 12, 2014
PHUKET: Phuketwan joined the large crowd at the Royal Thai Navy base north of Phuket at Tablamu, where the service marked Children's Day with skydiving, displays of weaponry and trips out on boats. Reporter Chutima Sidasathian joined a senior navy officer on the beach as the Navy did what it does best: communicates with people. The facility for protecting the Andaman Sea's turtles is close to where yesterday's event took place. A little further north in Khao Lak, Phuketwan delivered toys to a group of Rohingya children being detained at a family shelter.

The navy decked out in army battledress? That's something new!

Thai Navy and PW? That must have been a bit awkward.

Some of those photos of kids playing with assault rifles reminds me of the militaristic future in the scifi movie Starship Troopers.

I always thought the intense love thais have for weapons sat awkwardly with people here supposedly being "peace loving buddhists". This includes my wife and her family and also good friends of mine. They usually display a child like happiness when handling guns. It's all just a bit weird.
