Motorcycle Rock Throwers Held for Attempted Murder

Thursday, July 30, 2009
FOUR youths aged 14 to 17 have been arrested and charged with attempted murder after they threw a rock at a vehicle travelling through Phang Nga at night.

The youths would speed on a motorcycle alongside the vehicle, then a pillion passenger would throw the rock.

One 32-year-old woman was struck on the forehead by a stone as she drove home from a wedding on Phuket on Tuesday night.

The stone came through the windscreen of her pickup about 10.50pm as she headed home to Nakornsithamarat and she narrowly avoided having a crash.

Eight people were in her pickup, including three children under the age of three years. Friends travelling with her in convoy in another vehicle also saw the teenagers throwing rocks.

Local police arrested the youths yesterday afternoon after the wedding group identified the numberplate on a motorcycle.

Why did the boys do it? Police said they were told the four did it ''just for fun.''

They had seen reports of itbeing done in other provinces. It happened in a quiet rural district where there was not a lot for teenagers to do.

The woman injured on Thursday night, Nichapa Tongkongyai, told police that she was fortunate to not have been driving the vehicle fast.

Police Lieutenant Chongwoot Ponjan, of Takuathung police station, nine kilometres west of Phang Nga Town, said: ''It's the first time we have had this problem.''

The four youths are being held in juvenile detention pending a court appearance. As they are under 18, they cannot be named.
