Korean leader on Phuket, Yoon Ji Won, visits Phuket's Governor today

Korean Honeymoon Couples Need Phuket 'Intensive Care'

Monday, September 12, 2011
PHUKET: Korean honeymooners need ''intensive care'' so Phuket's local guides mostly need three or four years of extra language training to replace Korean guides, the President of the Korean Association in Phuket, Yoon Ji Won, said today.

''Many Koreans love to come to Phuket for honeymoons,'' he said outside the Phuket Governor's office in Phuket City. ''They need somebody who can give them intensive care.

''Most Thai guides who speak Korean needs three years' extra training or more to improve their language skills.''

Contrary to the negative comments made by some honorary consuls, Yoon Ji Won said that the 400,000 to 500,000 Koreans who holiday on Phuket each year seldom have problems.

''People from Korea love coming to Phuket,'' he said. ''It's much cheaper than the Korean options, and the weather is usually perfect.''

There were 15 regular flights and, with charters in the busy season, as many as 26 flights a week from Korean to Phuket.

He has been living on Phuket running a business for six years, and says Koreans are tending to look more and more favorably on Phuket as a destination.

About 2000 Koreans live and work on Phuket as guides, in tour businesses and in property and services, he said.

Yoon Ji Won accompanied South Korean Ambassador to Thailand, Chung Hae-moon, to visit Phuket Governor Tri Augkadachara at Provincial Hall in Phuket City. Chung Hae-moon, who has been ambassador for four years, heads home at the end of this week.

Korean engineering firms are well-placed to win the contracts for Phuket's proposed light rail from Phuket International Airport to Phuket City and for the Patong Tunnel, if it wins approval.

Hopefully though they won't take a tuk-tuk ride during their visit, otherwise the title of this article might have to be interpreted literally.

Amazing to read that the official President of the Korean Association in Phuket, Yoon Ji Won, recognises that 2000 Korean guides are working illegally as tour guides in Phuket while the other side 5 committees and commissions from the central government (Bangkok) and civile servants from Phuket are evaluating the way to eradicate illegal foreign workers, corruption and mafia-cartels in Phuket.
