Exclusive: How I Nabbed Patong Bomber, Phuket Policeman Tells

Wednesday, August 18, 2010
AN ITALIAN man was arrested at 12.30pm today and will be charged over the fire-bombing of a Phuket guesthouse.

Police spotted the man at an internet shop in Patong and this afternoon compared the Italian's features with security camera footage of the fire that badly damaged a guesthouse in Nanai Road at 1.30am on Tuesday morning.

Arresting officer Prasan Rattanawan said: ''I just happened to spot him from the back of the motorcycle. All the photos of the people we need to arrest are posted on a board at the Kathu Police Station.

''We took him back and compared him with the security camera footage of the petrol bombing. It certainly looks like we have nabbed the right man.''

The Italian, who has yet to be named by police, rode a distinctive red Honda Click motorcycle.

Police had been hunting the man after his description was circulated following the petrol bomb attack on the Jaran Apartments. The motive for the attack on the building is not known.

Police were questioning the Italian this afternoon and expect to take him on a recreation of the crime later today.

His arrest came because alert patrol police saw the man walk into the internet shop in Nanai Road. The policeman riding pillion suggested that they do a u-turn.

When they investigated, the officers caught the man red-handed as he stole a set of earphones, a screen camera and loudspeakers and was about to walk out the door.

Isn't it the LAW that all hotels and guesthouses must make a copy of the persons passport? Or at least have their passport details?

With that info it would have been impossible for the arsonist to leave. Glad one nut job is off the streets for now.
