The warning comes with Human Rights Watch issuing a call for Thailand's Government to fullfil a promise to impartially prosecute all those responsible for the 2010 political violence.
Citizens of other countries are also advised to stay well clear, whether or not their embassies have sent out emails.
Here is the message to Canada's citizens:
Dear Canadian,
You are receiving this email because you are registered with the Government of Canada's Registration of Canadians Abroad service. Please share the following important information with other Canadian citizens in your area.
Political demonstrations staged by pro- and anti-government groups frequently occur. Some of these demonstrations have led to violent clashes, sometimes involving the use of explosive devices. Several deaths and injuries have resulted from recent clashes.
Further demonstrations, civil unrest, sporadic violence and attacks remain a risk anywhere in the country at any time.
Up to 100,000 demonstrators are expected to gather at a rally in the Rajprasong area of Bangkok on May 19, 2013 to mark the third anniversary of the Bangkok clashes of 2010.
Demonstrations are usually accompanied by a heightened police and military presence and traffic delays. Avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings, military installations, and concentrations of security personnel.
Follow the advice of local authorities and remain informed of current issues by monitoring local media.
We recommend, if possible, that Canadians get in touch with their emergency contacts in Canada to confirm their whereabouts and wellbeing, even if they have not been affected by this event.
I have similar warning from UK Embassy.
