The Chinese man's body is brought to shore on Phuket today

Chinese Tourist Drowns on Day-Trip Off Phuket: Toll Mounts

Tuesday, October 1, 2013
PHUKET: A Chinese tourist drowned on a day-trip to an island off Phuket this afternoon - latest in a growing list of victims at sea.

Police from Chalong Police Station and Ruamjai Phuket Foundation paramedics were called to Racha Yai island this afternoon to collect the tourist's body.

Lin Hunhing, 30, went for a swim after having lunch and was knocked over by waves at a beach on the island, police were told.

By the time Racha lifeguards reached the man, he was unconscious and failed to respond to treatment on the beach, officers were told.

A Russian expat died in an unrelated incident while skindiving close to Racha at the weekend.

Chinese embassy officials have expressed growing concern at the lack of safeguards and ineffective systems for protecting Chinese tourists at beaches and on day-trips.

Phuket's Lifeguard Service does not operate on Racha and local speedboat crews have been criticised for lack of proper care of tourists.

Bus crashes, drownings...are the odds still in the favor of the Chinese tourist surviving their holiday in Phuket?

Very sad, BUT - The Chinese, in general, cannot swim! yet they insist on testing mother nature, she wins each and every time.

"A Russian expat died in an unrelated incident while skindiving close to Racha at the weekend. "
As you say, unrelated, so why even mention?

"local speedboat crews have been criticised for lack of proper care of tourists. "
So? Many people criticise others, also PhuketWan gets criticised.

Editor Comment:

Our concern is keeping people alive in the water so all all marine deaths have some relevance, whether there's a direct connection or not.

If you have nothing better to do than debate esoteric issues, stevenl, perhaps it's time you abandoned your pointless commenting and took up some form of community service. That's not a criticism, just a piece of useful advice.

Thank you for the advice, I already do that. Do you?

It sad, stevenl, that some people who sometimes have something of value to add sometimes lose their way as commenters and disappear into their own shallow egos. Goodbye.
